hi there all.
Has anybody been to Nigel dam lately?I see all the info is from 2-3 years ago!!
I have not been there and would like to know what facilities are there,costs,safety etc and are there still fish?I believe from what have read guys say bass,barbel,carp and kurper but dont know if that is all past tense

Nigel Dam self or "Die Pan"?

As far as i know they opened the other one also again, use to catch some nice fish there back in the day.

I haven't been to Nigel Dam in a long time but last time I heard there were a few safety concerns.

Use to see some big fish there and years ago we caught kurper there as well.

I know a lot of people go boating there also...

thanks for response well like i say i heard people talk about Nigel dam ,so im not sure what is there.
Here from Zim so looking for good fishing spots that are safe and with facilities for wife n kids. Been going to Vaal but like to find something bit closer aswell, i understand safety is a big issue no matter where you go

Vaal Dam definitely has some nice fishing spots but like you say you might look for somewhere a bit closer...

Do you stay in Boksburg?

I know about some places close to Alberton...

Rus in Orbi, though I think they changed it's name to Roodt Se Oord.

Also next to Rietvlei Zoo on the swartkoppies road, there are some smaller dams also and if you go through Brackenhurst you have Jackson Dam as well...

These are just a few spots close to Alberton which I know of...

Roordt se Oord very safe place and they have some Chalets which you can stay in as well...

Whenever I don't feel like driving out too far to fish I fish at one of these dams, otherwise I normally go to Vaal Dam.

yeah stay in Boksburg work in Alberton have heard and seen the dams/ponds you mention in Alberton but not yet tried.
Vaal is hard unless you know what you doing and also its not catch and release you can atleast take a decent fish or 3 home to eat ,still trying to get into a monster barbel

Than you must really go and give Roodt se Oord a go.

I've been going there for years now and caught some nice fish there. It is however a really hard dam to catch them though. Might be because of it's popularity and all the catch and release. Cause that place is always packed so better you go early in the morning...

let me chip in here, although being late!

yes we do a lot of bass fishing with the boat there.

there are two sides, to Nigel dam.
the municipal side where the gate is locked during winter times.
on the municipal side, you have the normal ablution blocks. these are also unlocked when the gate is opened.
there are some nice areas to have a braai, grass is cut short and small lapas are present for some shade.

there are even some swings for small children.
guys normally fish from the side casting baits in.
as this side is only open during day time hours, safety is no problem at all.

on weekends you can take the whole family without any worries!
entrance is free!!!!


the other sides to the dam is always open, no access control as such. no ablution blocks and no grass being kept short.
it is still safe to a point on these sides, but the night time would be a bigger risk.

last year we noticed that the subsistence anglers started fishing there.
these guys really made a dent into the fish population to my opinion!

only time will tell us what the present fishing situation is!

we have seen carp of about 7 kg being taken but the normal size is quite small.
the bass too have been absent, and if it is that all anglers are keeping the fish it would explain the absence........ for now.
it might be that the water was still too cold, three weeks ago!

mirage pan is the other dam.
I don't fish there as boats are not allowed!

Thanks for your feedback helps alot as not being from here it's not easy getting info on places that one can rely on, and lately it is difficult to find a spot where you  can go and chill with the lines in and have to look over your shoulder every 10min
