A unit with sidescan is really handy when fishing rivers and flat water as it picks up structure over a wide area to either side of the boat and not just a narrow cone directly below the hull that you get with conventional sonal. Lowrance HDS units are good and you can get them in "F/Finder only" configuration. They can be pricey though.

I had opportunity to go bass fishing on a boat that had side scan with large screen.
Seeing what this fish finder can show you is just amazing.
Now, I would not even bother looking at any other one that has no side scan - expensive yes , worth it - for sure.

I did some research on there HDI side-scan models. It is amazing technology.
I would have to do some saving for one on those tho.
My budget for now is R3500, maar my g@t jik to get one tho.

Good decision , rather save more and buy nice unit . Once you have it, it will give you such an advantage - trust me on it .
To give you an example - we went for bass with boat that had side scan. We would never catch so may bass if we did not have it . One instance , we picked what it looked small broken branch close to shore while crawling with electric motor and on side scan showed that is fairly big branch under the water and picked fish ( you could see clearly that was a fish in decent size) hanging just under thicker branch. Reversed a bit and start casting - I was glued to screen from amusement while other guy was casting . I saw fish disappeared from screen - I lift up my head and fish was on the hook. Bass 1.6 kg. Checked after, no more fish there - was only that one , we pushed off.
If we did not have that fish finder we would never catch that fish and if we did we will be casting for at least 1/2 hour after, thinking there must be more of them.

Would a function like that help me in rivers like the gamtoos and sunday river were i fish for Cob and Grunter. I can imagine for Bass fishing that HDI would be the bom. But i think for just scanning the bottom for slopes, seeing the depth and water temp the more cheaper one will be efficient.
I cant see one actually looking for fish in rivers like that.
Please correct me if i'm wrong... t(((up((

Not sure 100% on what you asking as I don't owe one yet.
But for rivers what I think side scan is best but you can also get bottom scan.
Remember with ordinary fish finder you scanning while boat is moving and only under the boat, while side scan you can scan while stationary and it covers nice area like even 100m ( if not more) towards shore.
You can sit and watch if any fish will pass in that area . Ordinary fish finder does not cover such a large area and especially when your boat is stationary.
Speak to people who has side scan finders for while. What I have seen on only one trip was enough to fully convince me that is best thing to have . I have ordinary fish finder and it looks total joke comparing to this side scan unit . You have to see yourself , I think will be best
