Hi Guys_seal1_

Im looking to purchase 2 bait runners that have extra spools and are a good quality for money.

I fish whenever i am able to and only fish socially.

Does anyone have any suggestions?

Hay Micks, long time no see!

Nothing wrong with the DL as the gents suggested, however...

If possible, go straight for a set of XTRB's... Just better quality.

Drop me a wattsapp and we can arrange for you to test them out!

Question: are the xtrb not discontinued?

Hi Iggy

As far as I know the XTRB is still available, however the XTR-RA have been discontinued and are being replaced with the Aero X range. Apparently the knew super baitrunner has some stella parts inside. Retailing for about R2000 per reel and R800 per spare spool.

Have you had a look at the Jackel reels. I bought the S-Series 7500 and been very impressed so far. Bought it from Western Accessories for about R600.

someone has suggested these reels before, so I really want to take a look at them... apparently great quality for money, especially for someone like me that does not fish that often

Thanks for the replies guys

does nobody use the Shimano DL4000 ?

I do want to get a couple of 4000's for the vaalriver and smaller waters but so far I have been forking out the cash on other tackle and gear...

@Micks - If you are a bit strapped for cash and do not want to spend a lot from the get go then go get the DL's. Its a good trustworthy brand and later, should you wish to do so, you could upgrade the bushes to bearings and effectively end up with the better reel as Dewald suggested

Being a student cash is a bit tight lol.... I bought a second hand (great condition) dl in the week for R400 which I thought was a great bargain... haven't got to use it yet, but can't wait to hopefully wet a line soon :)

Micks, I feel the pain...
All the new rods, new reels, baits and rigs... I want them all, but like you, I am a student, trying to get a bit of everything, especially because I fish quite a bit, and fish for lots of different fish etc.
Now I know the Shimmy guys are going to hate me for this, I'm not saying they are wrong, there is nothing wrong with the reels, if I had the money I would have 4 of the best.
What I want to say, I find myself in a position where I can chose between 1 reel, or 4. 2 reels, or 2 reels and 2 rods, I simply cant afford the so called "top of the range" reels. And I don't know if you feel the same, but I am not willing to pay that amount for a reel, only to put it on my R260-00 Carp Hunter, it doesn't make sense!
So therefore, if you are like me, you will want to pair the reels with "top of the class" rods too...
At the end of the day your setup will easily cost you R1 000 - R1 500-00 per rod-reel pair.
OK, let me get to my point, I've caught a few heavy carp and barbel, nothing to brag about, but I had a 16.3 kg common that got stuck in grass that surrounded the dam, Struggled to free her for probably an hour on a little fishing boat... My set up? a 12ft Carp Hunter, Conoflex CBF 500 baitrunner (With a spare spool), together not costing me much more than R500-00... Never had any problems with the reel, not once! Have friends who have gone through R2 000 to buy, repair, replace and buy another reel that should have been "Top of it's class"... The thing had like 10 bb's and was packed in foam and cardboard, it lasted a day, he went to replace it, it lasted a week and he now has one that still doesn't function... While all the while my 4bb Conoflex has been in the rain, on the back of the bakkie, full of mud, dust etc... Not a single problem... Running smooth as ever...
Quality isn't always reflected by the price tag, I know Shimanos are brilliant, but if you would rather spend some money on the rest of your collection (Which I see you are still busy getting together), have a look at the "Cheap stuff" in many cases they are of just as good, if not better quality.
My 2c ;-)

@JaquesRuan I get what you saying... a family member of mine has the conoflex reels and has said nothing but good things about them... there is also a carp calliber reel that goes for about R200 with a spare spool, which I might go for, for the time being

Student life is hectic lol, but all in good time my collection will be built

They are probably not the best reels on the market, but for what I can afford and what I need, they are fine... I mean, the fish wont know the difference... For example, I can buy about 5 Conoflex reels for the price of a Shimano...
The sad thing is, I will always want the new products and tech, but I've started to realize that most of the time you only "need" something once it's on the market... I try to avoid buying things that I have always been fine without... I also try and spend more money on what the fish would want, rather than what I want... Heard a story the other day of two students who entered a bass competition with one basic rod each and a small box of tackle, trotting up and down the bank, at the end of the day they outfished the pros who were chasing each other up and down on hundreds of thousands of rands of bass boats loaded with 6 rods each etc. Long story short, they went home with first prize - a brand new bass boat... But the point is, fishing isn't supposed to be as expensive as we make it.. Buy what you need, treat yourself once in a while, just don't feel pressured to buy what others have, take what you can afford, in due time you will learn to get along with it.
Nobody should feel like they can't afford fishing, then something in the industry is going horribly wrong!

((goodp_ So true! Once you get in the habit of upgrading to better top of the range it doesn't stop! I have upgraded so many times and it did not upgrade the size of fish I caught! Because we are tackle tarts we convince ourselves its better to have the best! Because we( anglers) don't mind paying top dollar for our equipment tackle shops will ask whatever they want! At the end of the day what matters most is that you know where to fish!

DL4000 small front drag, to slow for bank angling especially if there are snags.

Very good LTB reel with 4kg line

Wait 2 months longer and get the XTR-RB all 3 spool sizes are the same except for depth of spool ie capacity

All the old GTE and XTEA and DL spools fit on them to be used as extra spools.

With a once a year service and a lot of hard angling the reels will be sure to last you a minimum of 7 years before they need some small parts to be replaced
