Hi guys,

Was up in Pretoria this weekend and was dissapointed to see how expensive the Lume and Sada pumpkinseeds were. Don't get me wrong they are great lures but I can't afford to loose 5 or 6 lures a session.

Are there any posts that have visuals or procedures on how to make your own lures with silicone?

I can however share two tips,
1. I have switched over to small, wide chisel nose plugs that I use for the buddy casting technique
2.Replace the trebles on your Pumpkinseed and chisel nose plugs with barbless 8/0 circle hooks rigged assist style.(Much safer for you and the fish).
3.Tie the assist hook on the front end of the pumpkinseed lures ( similar to vertical saltwater jigs) while on the chisel nose plugs you rig them the same way as you would in the salt (at the tail end)

Look up rigging procedures for assist hooks on either Dropshot or offshore forums.

Do you get snapped often Zane? What line do you use when casting pumkins for cats? I use 65lb braid which some may regard as overkill but I have never been snapped due to force or being wrapped, seldomly I am cut of on rocks. Using this thick line and Madpumkins I catch several fish on the same lure sometimes fishing up to 3 trips with the same lure while smashing barbel one after the other on every trip.

I have personally outfished oaks using silicon pumkins on several trips using madpumkins. Most anglers I know that use to love silcon's have converted to Sada or Lume. Don't get me wrong, they will work but if you lose many lures your problem is your line and it needs to be sorted out as you don't want to lose the big one (using silicon or any other pumkin).

Hi Rudolph, what distance do you get casting 65lb Braid?, I am currently using 30lb and get good distance even into the wind. So far the 30lb is holding up well but I suppose if I hit a big Cat I am going to struggle a bit.

Hi Steve, I get good distance with my setup. My Curado can take quite a lot of line and I seldom miss fish due to them being out of reach. But fishing from the boat I usually don't need that much distance and also prefer to catch barbel closer as I have lost many fish with long distance casts as I don't have sufficient contact with the line and thus don't get a proper hook set. The 30lb will do, think if you hook a bigger cat in structure he will snap you. But so far its holding up good.

It is easy enough to make your own silicone lures. Get hold of some AMT moulding silicone they are based in Spartan in JHB and have branches in other major city centers.
Make a mold of your preffered lure of choice there are many tips on you tube with making molds.
Once you have removed your prototype smear the mold with vasaline and pour in the molding silicone - be warned if you donot grease the silicone will bind - wait 20 mins and break out of the silicone - thread wire through your lure add hooks and bobs your uncle.
It is easy and it is cheap - costs around R15 per plug with hooks etc.
There is nothing more satisfactory as catching fish on your own lures even if you do catch less....go for gold..

PS you can add things like bouyancy beads. neutral bouyancy and sinking beads to change the sink or float rate of your plugs. I have had loads of success and loads of fun building them. you can even dye the silicone for a bit of a colour splash
