Hi there EAGERFISHER
Welcome to Sealine
Dont know bout bait fishing for barbel its not my forte sorry, but Deon or possibly Ryan should actually be keen to answer you about this as Ryans a closet baiter (waiting for sources to confirm this or a slip of the tongue) and Deon has after therapy admited that he was and now and then still is not averse to casting a bait for carp and catfish, funny they were not crawling over eachother to get to answer you
Regards Carla
Ek het 2 babers in my dam op die plot en laat ek dit so stel die goed le stul vir dae lank dit lyk of hulle gevrek het so ek glo nie jy gaan n snore somer in die koue gevang kry nie, ek het n dam anderkant delmas met baie babers en groot goed ek het nog goed gevang en toe dit so begin koud word het het hulle net verdwyn.
I have been catching barbel all thru the winter. But there are a few thing that might help.
1. you need the size of the dam you are fishing the bigger it is the less the water temp will drop and the more active the barbel are.
2. even in the cold barbel do feed but not as much they move slower and strike less so you need to know where the are more or lessvvidevb
you can look at the surounding areas they are most likely to be lying neer reeds in the deeper end under trees and out of the streem ( if fishing river) Sou you will need to place it as close to those tipe of places for your best chance at catcing them.
But yes you can target them and they do still bite
I saw pics of 2 x 25kg+ Cats caught in the Vaal, private water in the Wilge river side. A few years ago on a specimen trip to Baberspan I got a 26kg in July 2006 in Baberspan.
Fishing will definitely be slow with their metabolism slowing down but it is possible to get them.
I watched a DVD by Emil Sada fishing artlure in Vaalkop in July last year and they got 10 Cats over 10kg in a single afternoon. What was interesting is that the barbel moved into shallow water during the day, less than 1m deep where they were sunning themselves in the afternoon sun.
