Hi guys

I'm new to spearfishing, but it get better with every dive. The only thing is that I am shit scared to encounter a shark. I live in Mossel Bay and here are some big tanne manne. Any advise on how to deal with sharks and how to get rid of my fear for sharks.

Thanks guys.

I had my first acounter with a shark in mosselbaai, a fat female raggy, there by Die punt, wanted to walk on water out of there (was about 800m out), but got used to her after a while.
Also had an encounter with one of those black-eyed sharks on my kayak, just off Santos beach... not the same sentiments, luckily it left after a turn past me, haha.

Think its just one of the thing you have to get used to, and a knock on the nose does help to scoot away when they become to nosey... dont know how legal powerheads are, but having someone dive with you, with a few of those also calms the nerves a bit.

For now, Im finished with spearfishing.

Thanks braailegend.
To date, I only stay between the rocks or just behind the rocks of Hartenbos and Reebok. Fish are small, but I am looking for bellman and big black tail. I've shot some big bronze breams, but thats it. Anyways, thanks man.

Hartenbos has some very nice garrick at those rocks, but the tande manne get there oxygen just behind the breakers.

If you can, try and dive infront of De bakke chalets, maybe swim round, if they dont want you to walk in. Ive entered at santos beach and swam around for about a day, and exited after the chalets. Was pasted after that dive, but got a nice steenbras in the surf, next to the santos caravan park entrance (also in less than a meter of water).

You can shoot belman, banded and normal galjoen, yellowbellies and cracker(they are against the rocks, where the waves break) in less than 2-3m of water infront of the chalets. Also there is a reef about a 300m swim out from there towards seal island. Very nice fish there aswell.

You not alone, sharks aren't a lot of people's favourite acquaintance. They freak the hell outa me

BUT, did you know that falling coconuts kill more people every year than sharks? 150 people die every year from coconuts falling on their heads

In the USA, over 42 000 people die in car accidents every year. That's ONLY the USA! Now imagine South Africa's road death statistics with our lovely, skillful taxi drivers, and common drunk drivers; gotta be more than 42 000 road deaths in SA a year

In South Africa, 52 people are murdered A DAY

How many people in the world die a year from shark attacks? Less than 10.... How many people are in the sea every year? Billions (Note, I'm not counting individuals, I'm counting how many humans are in the sea every year)

Statistically, you safer in the ocean than anywhere else

If you don't wanna get nailed by a coconut, don't stand under a coconut tree. If you don't wanna get flattened by a bus, don't drive your car. If you don't wanna get chowed by a shark, don't go in the sea. With all these things though, you take a chance, but the chance of getting attacked by a shark, and dying from it, is very very small compared to driving on the N2

Atleast you have a speargun to defend yourself from a shark ::S

Hope you a bit more comfortable after reading those statistics

I'm still poop scared of sharks ::craz
