hi chaps, needing your input..... im heading down to shelly beach end of december and im hoping to get out onto the big blue! any tips for launching i am a cat E so supposed to launch from a protected site but have heard shelly launch site is fairly protected. any views on this? secondly whats the actuall fishing like...any tips would be most appreciated.

Easy launch most of the time but time the sets

Go early and watch the other okes

Radio in from the backline and wait for permission...the little beach gets very congested early afternoon

Lowtide bad news...rocks

Also watch the concrete slip at hightide when beaching....only a few meters of sand to work with

Watch the tidal pool...always come in from the north on the back of a set

December fishing is always good .
Try the colour line from Port Shepstone for Dorado . The guys use floats and sards or livebait if you can get ...

The Protea Banks is open again in December to Jigging and artificial lures . No bait or bottom fishing .
Dorado , kingfish, amberjack and of course tuna to be found.
Even lost two marlin there for two consecutive years now.
If you are at a loss pull some red/white raps or purple halcos on Protea. You cant go wrong with those .

And a small launch tip .
Watch after the north east has blown and the swell turns to the east . A mean shorebreak can start that makes pushing in quite tricky .

I haven't fished there for many years now

Go to the clubs down the South Coast, there are quite a few, and speak to the okes in the pubs and tell them what you want to do

I presume you have a jetski, so Protea out for you with Cat E...also shark infested

I gave caught very nice Kingfish on rapalas, meters in front of Orange Rocks (Uvongo) to the dismay of the shore anglers

You can also launch at Ramsgate, Glenmore or Port Edward and work the area inbetween...at Spash Rock expect ANYthing

The ski boat club voted in favour of conserving this area last December so it has been running for a year now . The hope (from my understanding) is that this will also reduce sharks on the reef due to reduced chumming ...

This is only a gentlemen's agreement and not enforced by any conservation law yet but most of the private guys do abide by the ruling .

The launch is fairly easy, the only issue is it's very crowded especially in December. There are a lot of charter boats going out at Shelly.
These guys launch once or twice a day so they are well salted, my experience have been that for guys like me with expensive rigs that only launch once or twice per year, we tend to take more time and the local guys tend to get a bit frustrated.

There are also some vultures with cameras there always waiting for a skipper to make a mishap. I did my skipper course there and I must say these Paparazzi guys always annoy the crap out of me

I have a house at Munster, December I prefer to launch at Munster or at Port Edward unless I target tunny at Protea. My 2c's
