Hi all

Lately i've been hearing a lot of talk about the newish Mitchell's. Some people even went as far as to say that they have layed down ther Shimano X-Aero's for the Mitchell Avocast SA 6000 FS. I was fortunate enough to see how beautiful it layers the line, but how will it battle off against the X-Aero's?

Reel 1: Mitchell Avocast SA 6000 FS
Reel 2: Shimano X-AERO 6000 RA

1.LINE CAPACITY(mm/m):
Reel 1 - 0.35mm/230m
Reel 2 - 0.35mm/240m

2.WEIGHT(grams):
Reel 1 - 679g
Reel 2 - 615g

3.RETRIEVE RATIO:
Reel 1 - 4.8:1
Reel 2 - 4.6:1

4.BEARINGS(ball bearings + roller bearing):
Reel 1 - 7+1
Reel 2 - 8+1

5.RETRIEVE(cm gain per crank):
Reel 1 - 87cm
Reel 2 - 96cm

6.MAXIMUM DRAG(kg):
Reel 1 - 6.3kg
Reel 2 - 5kg

7.PRICE OF REEL(ZAR - West Trading PTA)
Reel 1 - R1400
Reel 2 - R2350

So given the 7 test above lets tally the victories of each reel.
Reel 1 : 3,6,7 - 3 wins
Reel 2 : 1,2,4,5 - 4 wins

So according to the above the AERO'S are better but what does the anglingnation of South Africa say about these two reels. Which one is the best reel to buy? Is the AERO's overpriced and not worth the extra R1000, or will the AVOCAST have the durability known to Shimano Baitrunners?

Hoping to hear from you guys?;)

For me.

Spares and longevity

All Shimano's I have owned (47 of them) have lasted in excess of 10 years and parts and aftersales support never been a problem.

The Penn is good and the reason for the price difference is that they are not made of as high end materials as the X Aero

The drag argument is irrelevant in Carp Angling as one never applies more than 2kg of drag even in specimen angling for fear or tearing hooks loose or bending a hook

The spare spools of an X Aero are close to R500 ea and the Mitchell's R200

As for spares and longevity. If you are buying new kit then for the same expense as 2 X Aero reels with 6 additional spools you could purchase 4 Mitchells (8 spools included) and 2 extra spools. End result is 4 reels that in total will last as long or longer than 2 X Aero's (fish 2 finished and then go onto the next 2)

Casting with 5lbs line and M0 the Mitchell does deliver better casting performance than the X Aero and while we were testing we used the Tribal LC 3.5lbs same rod, same line same day and constant 13m better distance with the X Aero

Personally I'm staying with my Shimano XT6000RB for bank angling

I thought as much. Great opinions expressed there.((goodp_

I have the X Aero's but a lot of people told me to sell the x aeros and purchase Mitchell's as they are better for casting and got a smoother drag - hard to believe as Shimano is known for the best drag in the business?

The Mitchell's compare price wise to the new generation Shimano DL's. So it will probably be a more adequate comparison. Reason for the enquiry is i have 4 reels - 2x DL 4000 FA & 2x X-AERO 6000 RA. i need inbetween reels for the 12ft rods? Or should i get bigger reels for the extreme casting rods?

Sell the DL4000 to a Light Tackle Boat angler

Get the Mitchell's for the Long Cast

Get 2 x XTR6000RB for the 10' Rods

Personal Choice. 7000 heavier with slower retrieve but higher capacity.

7000 with single handle better for large weights and specimen angling

6000 I would venture, better for bank angling

Oh.... i understand.thats a good choice. Hmmm better start saving then before these Mitchell's price skyrocket because of there popularity.

My 6 cents for what it is worth.

I bought 2 x Mitchell Avocast FS 6000 and i cannot complain.The line lay is perfect,the fighting drag excellent and to fish all day when the fish are biting no problem.

I do own Shimano's not the X-Aeros's they are to expensive for me and for me there is not much to choose between them although the Mitchell's are cheaper.

It is a personal choicce.If your budget are restricted like mine the Mitchells are a good buy.

How long they will last we will have to wait.

The only draw back with the Mitchells FS 6000 Avocast is they are to big and heavy for 10" rods.On a 10" rod the Shimano 6000's work better.
