Here is a Popping and jigging report from my recent trip to Tanzania, were I travelled with Mr. Ã…ke Olsson from Sweden, and also Mr. Lars Nielsen from Denmark, in the late March - start April 2010. We were fishing with Peter, the owner of Kilwa Dreams, in his new 35 foot gun-ship, Various Positions.
The trip started at Mafia Island, where we spent 7 days fishing. Then we sailed south to Okusa, Songo Songo, and finally we arrived at Kilwa. We fished a total of 12 days. We did a lot of Popper fishing + jigging, but we also did some trolling while sailing from one point to an other.
It is important to know, that this trip was arranged by Peter to "test" his boat and setup, and to find possible improvements. It was also Peters first fishing trip to Mafia with "Pro" fishermen. The trip was planned as an exploration trip, as we all wanted to check out as many destinations as possible. We stayed the most of the time at Mafia island, and we also got the most action there.
We all had a really great time, and in my opinion the fishing was just perfect. We had some days with fantastic action, casting lures to frenzy tunas and GT´s hunting together in big shoals, you just have to see this to believe it. We actually got 2 x triple GT´s, 2 x double Yellowfin tunas and double GT/Queenfish in these "frenzy" waters :O) We also had some really great fishing at the reefs, where we got a lot of GT´s. We caught a total of 110 fish. 31 of these were GT´s, with the best being 36 kg. (Weighted on a Salter weight, using a Carp sling.)
We also caught; Yellow-fin tunas, Bluefin trevallies, Queenfish, Grouper, Red snapper, Dog tooth tuna, Coral trouth, Baracudas, Wahoos, Dorados, King mackrels, Green and Rosy jobfish, and some smaller reef-fish, and also 2 great Sailfish.
This was, by far, my best fishing trip ever. I have never before seen an area with this much potential for fishing. In my mind, the number of different species, the amount of fish and the totally "unspoiled" waters, makes these waters very special. I think that we have only scratched the surface on this trip... and I'm definitely planning on going back there.
