HI all!

Anyone fishing these reels at the moment. Please could you provide an unbiased opinion of either and what the difference between the reels are?  I heard that the HAWK is a better reel but has been discontinued. Is this true? If so, how is it better as the MAGNUM looks so similair .I currently use shimmano baitrunners but am leaning toward adding a pair of centrepins to my collection. Any advice, input  or experiences would be appreciated.

Thanks.::tight:

Nighthawk's are probably the best of the bunch. Strong solid centre shaft, decent ratchet(loadest of them all)with a distinct sound. Guys who use them swear by them.

Spool is wide and shallow for extra distance when casting. Spool is reversable when casting. (forward or backwards.

Nothing wrong with using them for carp fishing but they have a very slow retrieve rate.

I hooked into two decent Largemouth yellows on the lower Vaal river on one trip.

I just could not keep up when they turned and sped in my direction and ended up losing both fish as a result. The speed of a large yellow fish is amasing!

I will however never forget the screaming sound of those ratchets as these yellows took off!

Hello! Thank you so much for the imput. Much appreciated. Very informative. Wow! Yellows! What a fish...I sure your reels where smoking. I believe that spares may beaproblem now that the nighthawks are discontinued. Any comments on the Magnum senior or sport models? Thanks again._seal1__seal1_

Shaft and ratchet on the Magnums are not so good. If you have a decent Nighthawk(last model they made) they should outlast you if you look after them and service(oil&grease) occasionally.

Nothing much can go wrong. Ratchet works on a internal spring system so of for some reason you need to replace springs they should be available(never had to replace mine yet).

Be patient and shop around(pawn shops etc.) and you could buy a extra one for spares if really needed.

In the end it boils down to personal preference.

Now that's the kind of advice I needed. Thank you. I confess, had no idea the difference between a Magnum and Nitehawk. I will take your advice and look for a pair of hawks. Just hard to find but worth the wait. If by some chance you come across a seller please could you let me know. Again, thanks.

I have the following contact numbers for that might help.

Boet
Magnum Reels

Nothing gets my adrenalin pumping like the sound of a night hawk running....But i traded mine in for bait runners as the retrieve was too slow. They are a classic.

Good Luck

Hello. Thank you very much for taking the time. Yes you are right, I have baitrunners and alarms and they have certain advangtages over the centrepins but i believe that the centrepin would provide an added challenge. Im wanting to fish these reels in the margins as such. Appreciate all the help.

:)
