Hi all

After alot of research and reading I have noticed that alot off poeple are using and 50lb or 80lb braid leader on the spinning rigs.

Now, here is my question, what knot would you use to join your 20lb braid to your 50lb or 80lb braid leader?

What length do you make this leader?

What braid do you use for the leader?

The leader will then be joined to a short mono leader with a fg knot.

Your input and guidance would be greatly appreciated

For lighter set ups (say throwing up to 1oz up 2.5oz) I like 50lb braid leader.
On an 11' rod use about 5m, perhaps 6m for a bit of room for retying knots to the mono section.
You might consider using a small power swivel to join the braid leader to the mono - just DON'T wind it through the guides under tension...

When I say 50lb I mean actual 50lb ie about 0.33mm - 0.35mm / PE3.5 - PE4
As an example, if you want to use Sufix 832, opt for the spool marked 30lb, it's ABS is around 45lb and it has the dia that matches this BS.

If I am in a rush, a Bob Sands (10 turns up, 10 down with 2-3 turns of the braid around the mainline and the tag end) Tiny knot and very strong.

More time? 22 turn FG with 6 alternating half hitches over the leader tag and main line, trim and then 4-6 alternating half hitches over main line only.

Still need to play around with a Rizzuto finish instead of the half-hitches.

Braid is so direct..I still like the safety the mono leader gives with is small stretch. I'll stitch an 80lb leader before my mono sometimes if spinning if fish and reefs are not being co-operative.

After lots of experimenting I have settled on a 3.5 m length of PE2.5 (35 lb) JDB 8-strand as a braid leader at the front end of my PE1.2 (21 lb) casting braid. Anything thicker than PE2.5, or longer than 3.5 m, does give the occasional guide wrap. It happens seldom, but enough to put doubt in my mind when casting. I have KR concept guides on my spinning rod and they do not prevent these guide wraps from happening. I use a FG knot to join the braid leader to the casting braid, and at the front I have a 1 - 1.5 m fluorocarbon leader joined via an FG knot to the braid leader with this knot hanging outside the rod tip guide.

I have been using the above for a long time now and don't suffer from any guide wraps anymore.

I have loads of respect for that JDB 8-strand as braid leader. It simply lasts forever. This week I went over a reef whilst landing two large needle-scale queenies in a difficult spot and subsequent inspection revealed no damage what so ever to the leader. Ok, they are not the strongest fish, but reef is reef.

I use both mono and braid as a leader, swapping and change between the two.
I am convinced a braid leader helps me load the rod better, but its just that, a feeling.
I like how quiet it is.
But I also like the toughness of a 0.50mm mono leader for spinning in shitty conditions.

Incidentally, Arno, the guide layout on the Turbulence will handle mono without issue.
I have in the past thrown 5m of 0.70mm mono through a similar set up, but prefer 0.40mm to  0.50mm. Also useful in that whilst it is tough as nails, it does create an engineered weak link. Nothing like your main line breaking 40m up the line when you hook a rock...

I am busy prepping my reels for the season lying ahead and to give the new rod a spin with a braid or nylon leader
