Hey guys,

Was wanting to know if anyone can recommend a good, waterproof 29 Meg for use on a boat. Also, does the 29 radio need to be licensed with ICASA, and for the record do VHF's need to be?  I Googled and the info I got from Beadbreaker is that the 2 radio's need to be licensed, but if operating a HAM, then the operator needs to be licensed (ie a course to be done). Does an agent selling the 2 radios, license it for you at the same time? Should one have both a VHF and a 29 Meg on board?

Patrick, depends on what you need to put your radio's. 29meg's and pretty much obsolete. Almost nobody here in Cape Town use them anymore. On out 40nm vessels, Catagory B, you're only required to have a VHF. Only a single radio, not 2.

The VHF has to be licenced by ICASA. Costs about R400.00, then an anual fee of about R50.00. You would also need to hold a radio operators licence, which comprises of a written exam and a practical also held at ICASA.

If you're planing to use it on your kayak, simply buy a hand-held VHF radio. Costs about R800.00 and because it has a power output of only 5w, you don't need a operators licence for it.

Be warned though, most dealers will not sell you a VHF radio if you don't have a licence for that specific radio. You must first go to the dealer, get the model number, then go to ICASA, fill out the required documents for that specific radio, then pay the money into ICASA's bank account, then go BACK to ICASA with the deposit slip, which they'll then stamp. With this, you dealer will then give you your radio. The original certificate will get posted to you. I waited 2-6 months for some of my certificates.....

Ja theyre a croaky old bunch at ICASA .It use to be the old P+T or Post and Telecommunications department and I think its still all the same old fossilized staff. Bureaucracy at its best. Please fill out this forms in tripliate and we will get back to you for an authorization codes interview blah blah ....good luck pal. Book now for that test

We commercials need both 29mhz and Vhf and this get tested with every year survey. it meant every year to buy new radio's as the stuff rust and corode. i bought me the uniden vhf and gx300 made in plastic and been ok for the last two years.

Patrick I got a new Dragon 29 meg here that's never been used. You welcome to it, just come fetch it.

We only have to have VHF on the B registered boat.

Hey HT! Thanks for the offer. I was green when i asked this Q originally, and since have found out it is better to use VHF, which is what i use now. But mmm, a little hand held 29 could be a valuable little extra safety tool.. May take you up on it if i can get out to you.

Strandwolf, who does your survey's? Mine is done by SAMSA and i have a catagory B rating on my vessel and the only requirement is a VHF radio.

Just call SAMSA and have them verify that you only need one radio. Can save some money!!::S

On the topic of radios, I need to purchase a new radio for my boat. I am not in SA at the moment and can have the pick of what is available overseas. Any suggestions or advice? I want the best that i can afford.

Miles is spot on. For cat B you only need a VHF. My boat is B rated/night rated and has never had a 29meg radio. Im installing one now because our club uses 29meg for comps.
