Hey guys, i need some advice!

I stay in potch but still havent found a a favorite carp fishing spot nearby. (Bass and yellows/flyfishing options are not a problem)

Im just looking for a quiet place i can go and papgooi for a day close to Potch and i would prefer the Vaal. Trying for carp in Potch dam and Boskop during the day is a no-go (exlusively night fishing if u want to get a bite haha).

There is limerick lodge but they dont have too much open bank so u need luck to get a spot and also the bank tends to be very, very steep towards the water. I want to show my girlfriend fishng so i would prefer a comfortable gras or at least open bank. Limerick is still the only option i have at present. Oh unless Rietsruit at Ventersdorp is worth it? The only time i fished there however, was very dissapointing.

Like i said most of the other lodges around potch offer mostly rapids for yellows which i enjoy but not when im tagging the girlfriend with. If anyone could help/advise me towards a suitable spot i would be immensely greatful!! Planning to go this weekend but probably only for a half day session.

Have you tried klipdrift dam. About 30km out of Potch on N12 back to Joburg. If you have a small boat the barbel fishing there can be awesome. Carp angling also okay (can be tough though)from the bank. I think this is one of Schalk van Breda's favourite dams. Boskop has way too much water grass when fished from the bank. klerkskraal used to be decent for carp but I believe they have closed it off. there were only a few spots for access anyway. Klerksdorp dam is also nice and there are chalets as well if the girlfriend does not like camping. The Vaal in the Potch area can be a challenge with steep banks and rocky areas making carp angling difficult, but I know some guys fish near Wawielpark with some success. The carp in this part of the river can get quite big. Not sure what Raaswater is like. There are a few resorts between Potch and Orkney where angling is decent (Kleinkariba etc).

Hi Richard

I also agree from what i've read and experienced that Klipdrift and Boskop can be very challenging from the bank. (Boskop is a wonderfull bass dam by the way). I dont know klerkskraal or Klerksdorp dams.

I'll have to research wawiel park but i reckon I'll try Limerick lodge or Raaswater. I actually remember now that Raaswater has some concrete "yetty's" with stairs for carp fishing if im not mistaking. I'll give them a call. I normally flyfish the streams when i go there.

I like to fish for carp with my light 6' rods but it does limit your casting though, and thats another reason these places will work for me nicely.

Hopefully i can report something back later in the weekend but with only a few hours of fishing im just hoping to land something and that the missis will enjoy the whole experience

I also normally only use short 6ft rods for carp. I do not own pap good wands. The Vaal between Potch and Klerksdorp is ideal as it is not wide. You just need to find some deeper water with not too many snags. Klein Kariba just a bit further west from wawiel park has some nice deeper sections. My PB in this stretch of river is 10.5kg, but their have been quite a lot in the mid teens and above caught along this stretch. Tight lines!
