Hey all

Been doin a lot of rock and surf fishing lately where casting far does matter no matter what they say..

I rather ignorantly bought myself a 10 foot rod of sorts way back when, and use it with a Penn500, 9 kg line and ussually 4 ounce sinkers. The rod's stiffness is 'average to OK'

I normally reach only about 55 - 65 metwers on average with bait, but with just a sinker I have managed the odd 80 meters.

Now my question is how much is the 'short' length of my fishing pole holding me back from hitting closer or even above that *magical* 100 meters? (Which WILL obviously improve my below average catch record :))

Looking to buy a longer rod eventually but dont have thousands to blow on fishing tackle as I had to move inland and saltwater fishing is limited to two weeks a year max :(

i wouldnt fish with anything short of 14ft, unless i was fishing for bait , shad etc. get a 14 ft and you'l probably hit the 100- 120 m mark, depending on how smooth and powerful your cast is, your ark is bigger, so your sinker will move faster through the air in relation to your tip which means a more powerful/ longer cast.

Ok I cant throw half the distance Dean can but a longer rod is not always better. Im really short and with a 14 foot it is to long to handle easily so I throw better with a 12f 6" rod the best is go and throw a few rods and see what is better

Your casting action will play a bigger role than rod length I have a 11ft that I can cast further with than a 13.6
and a 10ft rod that sends lead miles.
Go have a look under the casting section there are some clips as to "how to" also the rod/reel/line/diameter plays a big role as well as to how full the reel is spooled there are so many factors

Looking at rods that dont break the bank the Loomis shock wave is hard as nails and cast well also the new adrenalin rod(HMG I think) is priced verry well Nothing wrong with BM G3 and shimano exhage 1486 Reel wise look at the usual suspects simano 20/40 and diawa sl50 to pair with the longer rod.

Dont rush in to a buy ask if you can test the rod before casting or if some one is in your area with a simmilar rod ask them ,the guys on sealine are always willing to help.

dont forget the swap/sell sub forum on sealine so good combos to be had there.

Good luck

My length is 1.9m so nope, thats not the problem

I reckon with the combo I'm using I should (hopefully) be reaching close to its casting range limit. But I dunno... its really not that far im throwing..

well like mango said, it all goes about what rod you are comfortable with, you really have to practise, practise, practise until you find your own "groove".I still have some shocking casts where i send the lead flat about 30m out hitting the water at the mach 3!

Target mostly eds but I 'll never say no to sharks etc.

But even bank fish are often quite far off the beach to get to. Except when u are lucky enough to have  nice gully right up to the beach (but then the sand bank behind the gully is far again LOL!)

Im 1.7m, had a 15ft/7 built. I cast further with that with that and a 20/40 than my blue marlin G3 or Shimano 1446.
Different strokes for different folks I guess
