yip.. and its something I never quite will understand, the selfishness of most skippers down here. when they come apon fish it suddenly becomes theirs and nobody else must find out the fish is coming up. that I think is the reason for their anti social behaviour when at sea. casual conversations is out. we dont need a radio where we may have lenghthy conversations with other for they might just find out where we are. we only need vhf in case we in trouble. I wonder why they answer the phone if it rings.

I monitor and speak to quite a few commercial guys - not on 71 or 69 - on the lower simplex channels to find out where the fish is. always short and sweet conversations on vhf ( once again just in case someone else is monitoring) but we chat for hours on ssb.

No biggy Fanie. it seems we were both posting at the same time. This type of arrangement needs to start at club level I think. maybe I'm just a crazy socialite and enjoys chatting at sea. I go out sometime witha few guys and spend most of the day at sea. sometimes for a bit a fishing but most other times doing absolutely nothing. having a beer and chatting whith whoever i find on air. I have a lot a time to waste. sorry for bein so pushy

I must say, in all my years of fishing the last thing on my mind when getting the fish is climbing on the radio and spreading the news. Another mayor factor for us Cape Town guys being so selfish on the radio might be the fact that unlike PE we target a lot of species that is constantly on the move, take yellowtail for instance,so no use calling the Cape Town fishing community to come join in the fun when you spend the whole day looking for the buggers (a fish that does not like millions of ski boats racing towards them when surfaced).

I think each to his own, and with all respect saying the Cape Town Guys are selfish just because they dont spread the news constantly is a bit harsh. Maybe we just enjoy fishing more than talking on the radio.
