Grinder servicing

Dear All,

I have perused all the forums and mostly multipliers are mentioned in the servicing discussions.
My question is as follows: Regarding a non-sealed grinder, would you pack the gearbox full with grease or only grease a thin layer periodically where applicable?

My concern is water retention with too much grease.

Thin layer once every few trips (depending on use).
Too much and some sand = grinding paste.

On a charter boat, we do it once per 10 trips.

Thank you Fin-S. I have an old grinder that I am servicing for a not so fortunate boy and would at least want to do a good job of servicing it and afford him an opportunity to use it for an extended period.
I opened it and it was packed with grease by previous servicing agent.
As I understand it and from an engineering background, lightly cover inside of casing with grease for corrosion and apply grease to all mating areas sparingly. As we know oil bearings/bushes and do not grease.
