Grinder issue

Hi guys, a friend of mine has one of the old model saragosa 8000s.
When there is pressure on the line i.e. when reeling in or with a fish on the reel becomes very tough to reel in. He says to the point where you can barely turn the handle.
He takes good care of his reels and it has recently been serviced, but this issue persist.

Anybody got and idea of what the issue might be?

seems like pinion and main gear not lining up.

did the techy really service it properly?
time to take a closer look inside.

pitty is, you need to strip plenty of screws to just inspect the main gear and pinion.

clearly not a new age penn grinder lol
4x screws and you are done!!!

I have same problem with a sustain 5000 checked lineroller working , the reel has stood for 3 months could the grease have dried and making it stiff under load .

Yes it could be but more likely a seized/corroded bearing on either the main gear or the pinion gear. Reel will turn freely when not under load as the seized bearing works as a bush but binds when under load.

My older 'Gosa did the same thing. I opened it up and found the 5 small screws holding the pinion gear had come loose and were pushing against the inside body of the reel. I cleaned the threads and loctited the screws. Simple job, no need to send it in.

After looking at the schematics, its the main drive gear not pinion as I mentioned. Also it looks like it has 6 screws.

when things don't line up as they should, they become skew.

with the gears skew, it will cause friction.

reels needs to be well lubbed.

just have a look at your one way bearing/ non reverse bearing.
if its starting to fail it too could cause a lock up.
