grease for baitcaster?

Hi Rrebello

I would not recommend you use grease to service your reels, oil would be a much better choice. I bought some oil from Basswordl in Centurion called "Hot Source" made by Quantum. This works brillianatly actually made my reels much smoother and free spooling much better. Almost like fishing with different reels and I had to get use to them all over again.

Thanks I have oil (the daiwa brand)..i heard if u open up a baitcaster its all spring loaded bearings and gears and its all tightly packed...is it really complicated to service? or was the person that told me this trying to sell me a new baitcaster?

Easy as Pie all you need do is give your bearings a squirt.
Some guys choose to warm their bearings before they grease them -makes the grease go into the bearings a little better

Servicing a baitcaster is not rocket science - rather simple actually if you take your time (especially on your first try!) and do things methodically, keeping all the parts in order for re-assembly.

I would not grease bearings on a baitcaster, rather use oil (Reel-X or any other appropriate oil, such as Hot Sauce) on the bearings of baitcasters as grease in the bearings would slow the spool right down and severely compromise casting distance.

Grease (Cal's Reel and Drag Grease - nothing else comes close) will take care of the gears and Carbontex drag washers (a must-have!) ... a little oil will do for the other moving parts ...

Before you start, check out the following websites for some excellent info:

A good service (and a Carbontex drag washer upgrade from Smoothdrag) will revitalise just about any old reel (provided it was of reasonably good quality to start with) ...

Old ABU Ambassadeurs from the 1970s and 1980s were not known for their smooth drags, but if you do the drag upgrade and give them a good service, they may just become your favourite reels!

I use sewing machine oil , it works like a charm due to its low weight , thus letting you cast further

I forgot the grease and oil i use...but i nearly thought i needed to throw away my one baitcaster or take it in for repairs, after some 13KG catfish fights, but first thought i must try and lube it up....well i did it and now its running like a machine again.
So its really neccesary to maintain your reels...

I use Trinity Royal Oil Bearing Lube and Acer Bearing Lube.
It's mainly for my rc cars' bearings, but works very well on my baitcasters' bearings.
Just thought if they're made for bearings that get stressed out a lot, might be good for my baitcaster. No complaints yet.

They cost cheaper than the Quantum hot sauce, which is imo too thick.
