The setup that you recommend will stand you in good stead,if,(big if) ,you are accustomed to casting plugs all day long.If there is any doubt in your mind that you may just be stripped by a catch of a lifetime,or that you may be frustrated by a few overwinds due to the erratic jerk-retrieve action of poppers(like you mentioned above) ,which brings about uneven line-lay and the resulting overwinds, then I would recommend the following as an option to consider.(bear in mind that chisselnose plugs and spoons do not necessarily share the same problems mentioned above, your main adversary to contend with, would be casting into the wind.
Anyway ,back to my suggestion,Shimano has the ''Spheros"-range of reels which does not break ones budget(probably about ZAR 1500-00,shop around) The 8000 size should be just right as a combo with the rod you mention(hopefully you get it in a spinning version),if they dont make a spinning version you may want to look at the Poseidon HMG-Ultralight Spin .I'm not sure of the price, but I saw one at the Tackle-box in Shelley beach in DEC for about ZAR1500-00,(stand to be corrected).
The Spheros has a retrieve ratio of 4.7:1,yet it still retrieves enough line per handle turn to pull a 2-4oz chisselnose plug on the surface, and it has enough cranking power,to make a popper push some water,so you see it is a bit of a compromise, but it will stand you in good stead. The drag on these are also strong enough to handle almost anything that you may hook(including Kingies).Furthermore, you will be hindered less by a headwind, and may enjoy more time in the water.Spooled with maybe 30lbs braid,(300yards+some mono backing)and a fluoro leader, you should have line aplenty for many a big fish.
p.s The 8000 size is slightly lighter than the 6000 although they are of similar dimensions,it is only the spool that has been machined a bit more, for larger line capacity. Here's a link to the reel I mention.

If you have the luxury of time, shop around and avail yourself of the rod and reel in question, and last but not least ,get as many opinions as you can, although this set-up is cheaper(not by much),it is still necessary to spend your money wisely
Cheers
