Ahh yes the Liesbeeck carp - I don't know when those things ever feed - I've given up on them - standing around in as crappy a venue as that and seeing these unco-operative denizens just doesn't do it for me!  OK I'm going to give the directions to what is by far one of the strangest venues I have ever fished - it has a good head of smallish carp - the biggest I've landed was just short of 3 kilos but my oh my they give a damn good account of themselves and very pretty fish - almost black with bright orange-yellow lips; the largest blue kurper I have seen in the Western Cape - easy two kilo fish and then lastly, unstoppable catfish - I never fished for them intentionally yet - they often slukked floating crust I was tempting the carp with and on 3 kilo line - even with a 10 kilo leader - they were unstoppable!  OK to get to this little piece of un-fished heaven:  take the Constantia/Hout Bay off-ramp on the M3.  If coming from Cape Town then it is easy once you've taken the offramp - just before you reach the stop street T-junction with Old Constantia Main road there is an open field on your left that is part of the clover-leaf off-ramp - it has a few large trees and and is open - it was a site camp for the roadworks and sewer upgrade - pull in, park in the open and walk towards the bridge (the M3 going overhead) - you will notice what looks like a driveway going down to the trees - walk down there and cross the shallow drif thru the stream - you will now notice a beautiful tree-lined pond - quite bi and very deep - its about 3m deep 15-20 meters in and almost 2m deep right in front so be careful!  There are numerous gaps in the trees where you can fish from.

The catfish here will eat anything - I used have them pestering me whilst I was pre-baiting the carp with bread - they would rise up and vacuum the surface - I'd suggest using a simple streamlined float with a 20cm hooklink and anything edible as bait.

Let me know how it goes.  And remember this is one of those almost unfished venues so take care of the fish and please release everything you catch.

Cheers

Wow...
What a good oke.
Thank you. I will most definitely go have a look.
I've got a date with Kalkbay harbour this weekend, which I've never fished, so next weekend, weather permitting, I'll be there.
Regarding the fate of the fish, I am very much concerned with taking only photographs and leaving only footprints. Fish being injured aside, few things irk me more than finding a spot covered with litter.
Thanks again for the information. I shall report back.
In the mean time,
Manna for you sir.

Thanks for the info!
I have looked at that pond many times and wondered to myself if there were any fish in there!
I am expecting a new rod that I ordered shortly so maybe will try chuck some lures at the catties! I want to try some topwater frogs....
There is also a pond near Strawberry lane not too far away, in Constantia, I have yet to fish there though.... I need to find venues to chuck some lures....but then I haven't even tried Zandvlei yet....saltwater lure fishing off the rocks/beach around here doesn't seem to be a good idea...

I am game to try any pond no matter how small (neighbourhood/gardening centre koi fish don't qualify I guess)
Anybody try Pollsmoor prison dam?

No prob!  The Strawberry Lane "pond" is a very nice looking spot - I haven't fished it yet but it should have the usual suspects!  Another interesting spot is on the grounds of Norman Henshilwood High School - next to their tennis courts there's an irrigation dam on the banks of the Diep River - it is moerse deep - there's a 20-30cm wide shelf 1.5m down right on the edge - beyond that I didn't touch bottom with a 3m long pole 50cm out!  There are some nice carp in there and bass and blue kurper.  Fish close to the little pumphouse next to the clump of spanish reed.  While setting up throw handfulls of bread crust all around the surface - by the time you set up there should be good feeding activity.  Use at least 5kg line - there are loads of sunken trees on the right side of the pond - you can't miss them but the branches extend quite far underwater - and there are some decent carp in there - you have been warned!  If you go on a Saturday nobody will bother you - there's usually a crowd training their dogs on the sports fields.

Has anybody fished the quarry in Vredehoek - all the way to the top of Derry Street and then left turn to the parking lot under the trees - there's a quarry there that I always checked out and saw evidence of angling - a colleague told me there's bass in there!  Someone should check it out - proper! with rods and all.  Its a safe spot - lots of people walk their dogs there and there's a security village at the parking lot with cameras and all so no skollies pull in!  I'd appreciate some feedback!

Cheers

howsit gents wow i know im alittle late for this thread but i hope this could help i target my ats at the liesbeek rite by the river club and as you drive along the river you will see tose moulds of compost i dig there for some worms and these bad boys are BIg a couple on a 3/0 hook leave some tails hanging off we caught 4 cats there over 10kgs and ive also seen plenty of koi carp the carp also take a DRIFTED worm on a small hook lines must be as thin as possible but be warn have had  smaller cats 1-2kg range snap these drifted worms cast the worm about a foot in front of the carp that should get them to bite tight lines

It's never too late man. The fish are still there.
Shot for the info.
This is great news, as I've heard lots of people recommend worms for the Liesbeeck, and a reliable source is pretty difficult to get a hold of.
I still have a bone to pick with those cats.
Might actually go have a look tomorrow.
Also considering having a look at Zandvlei (Rutter Rd.) and maybe targeting some carp along with the barbel.
Thanks again dude. You've got me amped.
