what i do: snell your main hook (say a 4/0) and then just have your skelm (say a 2/0) sliding above it on the trace. you can snell the skelm too, but i found that limits options / makes it tricky when baiting up because you can't slide it up and down - eg. bait with bloodworm you want more space between than for a prawn bomb.
what works well for the skelm is vmc's circles with the bent back eye (think they call them "sports circles", if memory serves) - lies nicely against trace, and i expect if you get a hookup on it the action should still be good as pressure from the bait / main hook will turn it inwards.
i caught a nice steenie not too long ago on this set up, and a monster roman just before that, although in both cases it was the main hook that did the job.
i've actually never used a circle for the skelm hook, usually do a circle for the main with a j skelm, i dunno just my intuition tells me that should work better...
heard of many good catches thanks to the skelm, but personally only happened once for me with a kob last summer - not been bothering lately. but still believe in it for kob, especially since one uses big hooks then, say 7/0 main with a 4/0 circle.
