Morning all, I got a question with regard to the breakup time of  your mieliebom.  I usually use a glass of water in which I place a bom after casting. Let say the bom take between 5 to 10 minutes to breakup completely in the glas I take it that the bom in the water has also broken up completely. Know my question is this  what influence  will the following factors have on the breakup time of once bom:

1.       The impact of the bom with the water after casting (wouldn’t this have an influence on the structural  integrity of the bom)

2.       Wind conditions

3.       Water temperature

4.       The depth of the water one is fishing in.

Well water impact might play a role , that depends on how firm the bomb has been made. Wind I don't think plays a role, water temp does play a role experiment with cold water and warm water in a bucket with the same bomb mix and you will see the result, I make my bomb less stiff in winter times. Another point might be water pressure at depth might cause your bomb to break down slower,...........I still havent got scuba gear yet to dive in 10 mtr water to time bomb breaking times. LOL:sc:::

Your bom basically disintergrates on impact (i know this because i was once busy rowing my lines out when some ballie almost got his into the canoe,) i saw that it just disintergrated. maybe a stiffer bomb is better as some of it stays with the rig, but the whole point of it is to create a feeding area around your bait. The bomb wont spread out too much unless your fishing in a mean current or fishin in 50 m deep water. :s

I beg to differ , ive had bombs come out with the line after laying a 1/2 hour . It all depends on how you prepare the lok , just my 2c

i have to agree with you there vleipadda but i found that's mostly the case when fishing with springs or those neon colour bom holders, if you use a mushroom sinker the bom breaks up most if not all of the time...

Youre quite right there , I however add morvite to my bomb after I had it in the freezer , sometimes im lazy to cook and grind a fresh batch every time so I do it bulk and freeze it

okay, i've only used fresh ground bom once, i use the plain bom that mixes 2:1 with water. that breaks up very nicely...

Done this one be4 ...your bomb must not break up on impact with the water so it must be firm enough to go to the bottom, what actually breaks your bomb up is the release of air particles in the bomb, water temp and wind dont really make a diffrence at depth unless u use more popcorn and husk type feeds in which case it will break on impact and float away at will. what u use is important ... if you ad chick feed or mielie rice it significantly alters the composition of the bomb and how it breaks down as well as the time.

if you getting it to break down that efficiently then do the impact test from a significant height in a pool, if its breaking up on impact then your feed is too dry if its too wet you cant cast so theres got to be an exact amount of water to feed ratio for how you mix yours. i am not sure about pressure ...  i've noted a significant increase in my catch rate by getting the feed right wen you get it exact you will notice on reeling the sinker back (this is in the pool tho) that it doesnt trail the feed in long lines on the bottom of the pool  ,it just leaves a blob of feed behind on the bottom  

thats brought me significant success cpled with accurate casting, thats my 2c worth bud

Hi All

There is a product I picked up a few weeks ago called Atoom Mix. The instructions/advert says you add 1-2 teaspoons to your bomb, which causes it to explode on hitting the water. Well suffice it to say I bought some and tried it out this weekend in the shallows, more of a fizzle than a bang. It did not explode my bomb into pieces as advertised but definetly broke down quicker than normal giving off small gas bubbles.
I personally prefer to use a combination of 80% BFA mix and 20% Blitz mielie bomb mix.
