Hi
After the month long fasting,I decided to feather off the dust and cob-webs from the last season and check what was happening at the river.A good mate and also a member of Sealine,Sugeshin, joined me on his maiden trip to the Vaal River. Now Sugeshin is,from what i am told,an honourary member of the infamous Roundbush fishing spot and a master of nailing spotted grunters. To him, freshwater fishing was boring as there is no fun in catching a fish that does not fight. How wrong he was.
Arrived at the river at 1.15pm and started setting up before we could hit the water.the trip would not have been completed without the presence of the legendary Wobbly. For those who have heard of him.
Entered the water with Sugeshin close to me as I started explaining to him of where to find this freshwater "garrick".
It did not take long and I was on with a steam train. As soon as i hooked it,I handed the rod over to Sugs to fight it.After a long fight, there was a tangle with another guy's line who was bait-fishing.At that spot of the tangle, the trace bust.Nevertheless,he could not stop smiling because he felt the power of this fish .Not to be out done by this we moved about 3 meters away and bang I was on again.I handed over the rod to him and now he felt the true power of this steam train that shot straight into the main current which made his forearms burn. After a prolonged fight, not sure who was more tired him or the fish,I netted this monster of a mud fish.I would assume the weight of it was close to 5.2kg.next flick and we were on again and again and again. We probably caught and landed close to 9 and lost about 6.Those that were lost gave a good account of themselves.unfortunately no yellow fish was landed although 4 were caught which were lost.the mud fish kept us busy and the smile on Sugeshin's face is still there today.Sugeshin had this to say " i never thought freshwater fish would give such a fight like that."He is hooked.
i am sure that you are wondering where the pics are, well as soon as he down load them,I will post them up here.
the water temp is still very low for yellows to be in full swing.hopefully,if no more cold front hits,by end of this month, the water temp would have risen and the "Vaal Gold"will make it's presence felt. The mudfish has been very active this whole week and reports comming in from rreliable sources is that they have been like this for the past 2-3 weeks with the odd yellowfish.I have a report of a friend of mine landing 12 yellows in the small range last week tuesday and then 14 muddies on thursday.but mudfish seems to be the order of the day.
for those who will be venturing out to catch yellows PLEASE RELEASE ALL THE YELLOWS CAUGHT.THE LARGEMOUTH YELLOW IS ALREADY ON THE CRITICAL LIST AND THE SMALL MOUTH IS POPULATION IS JUST AS BAD.
that's it from me until the next Vaal Fly fishing report.
Cheers
Garrick
