Fish Finder for Fishing Ski

Guys,

I need your advice please.

I am starting to do some research on FF for my fishing ski and the Garmin 140 looks like a good option.

But I have very limited experience with FF and really have no idea what work and what not.

The Garmin comes with a dual transducer... What does this mean?

I have some other questions but that will come once I have an idea what to look for.

Thanks for the help guys.

Hi Gerhard,

I don’t really know the 140 so I did a quick search on the specs. The most important thing about sonars is the number of vertical pixels. In this case it is 128, this is actually about the lowest you can go in sonar quality. The fact that Garmin have made it 240 pixels wide is quite clever, and will catch the unaware buyer. Because if it was 240 vertical and 128 horizontal (shorter history), then it would be quite a good little unit. Anything under 240 vertical pixels is purely a ‘bottom finder’ and might as well just be represented by a number indicating the depth.

The dual frequency transducer is a bit of a gimmick as well, because the unit does not have enough clarity to offer a ‘lower quality’ wider angle for shallow water in the first place.

Unless it is given to you as a gift, I would stay away from it … unless you are actually just looking for a ‘bottom finder’. But I think you could find one a lot cheaper (Cuda128)

Hope this helps.

Regards

Thanks that really helps a lot.

What fish finder would you recommend I look at then?

Gerhard,

If you are fishing on a tractor inner tube with an OK Bazaars special rod & reel combo, then I would say the 128 vertical pixel finders are fine.

But if you are anything above that, I say get that credit card out and hit it hard. One of the absolute best non-commercial finders on the market, is the Eagle SeaFinder 640c DF (R7k)

Now if you got one of those fancy platinum cards then I would suggest the Lowrance LCX37c with a Broadband Sounder 1 attached to it ... Oh Baby!!

Thanks Fishton,

I will shop around and start saving.

There is no credit card around here just cold hard cash...

Thanks for the advise
