First time fishing Gordon's Bay with boat. Any suggestions?

Hi guys :)

So my dad and I got a 5.2 semi-rigid and my dad mentioned that he wants to go out at Gordon's Bay to see if he can stomach the see and then try trolling or fishing a bit while out.

We are thinking about this Saturday, any thoughts? This is all new to us and I know locals don't easily share fishing spots or waypoints etc. I tried searching and found the old waypoints from Oom Daisy but not sure if it is something to go by and which ones to try.

If someone could provide us with some info/tips, it will really be appreciated.

Thanks guys _seal1_

Come out of the harbour, turn right and head towards Strand. After about 600m from Harbour Island you will see a wooden pier entering the water. Line up between this pier and Cape Point about 500m offshore. Nice little reef. Light sinker and 1/0 - 2/0 hooks, fresh chokka and pilchard as bait.

After 20 mins if no joy carry on, same distance offshore off of Strand slip, nice drift area.
If no joy, then carry on down to the Blockhouse off Macassar. About 1km offshore, nice drift area.

You could also carry down to Strandfontein, but I would leave that too later in the year.

If the easterly is a bit strong then run around Boskloof point, past Steenbras mouth. About 300m around the point and 500m offshore is another reef.

Wow, thanks Fin-S _seal1_

Do you know where one can catch fresh chokka? Or can you buy it "fresh"?

And at the Strand and Boskloof, what will we be typically targeting?

Target most reef fish but common catch are red roman. If you do get them on the bite, catch one and then move on. No point in cleaning out a patch of reef. Chokka from Somerset Sports are generally of good quality.
You can also catch them on the 10m reef about 1.5km offshore of Strand Lifesaving club. Best bet though is to tow around to Buffels or Simonstown when guys are catching there - much quicker and easier.
What time are you thinking of launching and with what car - I might be around.

Thanks Fin-S,

I am not sure yet. I am still trying to get someone to fill in for me at work tomorrow, but I guess it would be early morning. We only took our boat out for the first time in Velddrif last Saturday so dad wants to go again now in Gordon's Bay but I want to fish. So we are trying to do a bit of both.

If I know what time etc, I will post here but we will probably tow with a Amarok and the boat is a 2005 model Infanta 5.2 SRI with 115 Yamaha V4. I will stay posted here if I know what is happening by tonight.

We will be going out tomorrow morning looking for some bank fish. Will possibly go to Boskloof. Will be launching at probably 8am or earlier pending on our guys.

Let me know if you in the area.

Ok I just found out that I have to work tomorrow, can't get someone to fill in for me. A real bummer!

Is there a place to catch chokka from the shore? Is Simon's Town harbour still the one to go or can one catch chokka from the side in Gordon's Bay? Just thinking if one could catch and freeze for when needed instead of having to go out and catch chokka before fishing...

Hopefully Sunday afternoon or Monday we can go out as I am not working then.

Aaaaand as luck would have it, I found a late replacement for my shift tomorrow. So I am hoping to be at the harbour at 8am or just after. We will probably launch at harbour island...?

Choke are mostly caught from the shore in the summer months, kalk bay harbour been your best bet on the evenings between the SE gales, you can also catch from the town jetty in simonstown below berthas, but this spot can become extremely crowded!
Ive only caught chokka on the gordons bay side of the bay a handful of times a good few years ago down at macassar, this was however an exception and not the norm. This time of the year your best bet for a few chokka would be to launch at millers or buffles bay and go lay in buffles for a few chokka, the last few years i have had my best chokka fishing around winter there. In summer you can also catch chokka from the boat just off simonstown at the bullnose and all along there towards kalk bay and up towards millers, must just find them on your echo!

Thanks Mahi mahi! Quite thorough reply there and very helpful, I just still need to figure out where all these names are :p

@WayneH... did you guys catch anything?

I entered the Boskllof coordinates that I found on here, but it was 4.5km off shore. Our boat is currently only rated for 1NMI. I don't mind going out that far if I have signal, but I will rather err on the side of caution. As such, we turned around and went closer to the shore at boskloof. Nothing though.

As we stopped, and started bobbing in the water I almost immediately felt my stomach turn. I had a cafe latte before going out and think it wasn't such a great idea now though. So the whole morning was spent me trying to not throw up and my dad and the other's dropped lines here and there but caught nothing besides a few ugly barbers. Barely any bites.

I don't know where to go!!! Damn this isn't like damn fishing where you look for a structure and this and that and make a cast. You just see big open waters and then need to choose a spot :/ We drove bit by bit and would stop and watch the fish finder but rarely found anything.

@Mahi mahi, how does chokka appear on the fish finder? Would that be a fish symbol with just the outline?

Each echo writes different, on the bottom of this pic you can see how chokka writes on my Garmin 721

Thats with the fish symbols turned off. Fish will now look like arcs and the chokka like dots as shown.

Also it is also like dam fishing. Find a structure and you have reef fish :).

if you use the search function you will find some waypoints on this site.
