WOW 34kg eel in the Gamtoos!! would love to see a pic of that monster

I think i will be targetting the eel again. Now that I know there are real monsters around, its gonna be a head on a eagle claw or a carp swimbait ::S

Spoke to Barry earlier today and he's gonna get the pic of the 34kg from the newspaper as it is a world record and I'll be sending the pic on to the custodian of the World Freshwater records in Europe.

Barry recommends night fishing for big eels and they use Live Moggel (Mud Mullet), Yellowfish, Carp or even Mullet in the Gamtoos floated under a balloon (kept 30-60cm of the bottom and they use seriously strong tackle as when the eel takes the bait it heads straight to an obstacle and like a Catfish they have a built in GPS with all the snag waypoints programmed, filthy dirty fighter and extremeley strong when big.

They know they only have to win a 2m fight so they put absolutely everything into the fight to snag you up

even that 2kg eel took line off my sustain and the ugly stik was a bendin'!

I reckon jigging gear should do the trick, designed for hit and hold fishing

I didnt know you get yellowfish here, which kind and how can i catch it? :)

oh and do they use circle hooks cos the eels have a tendancy to swallow hooks?

Small mouth yellows, in the Sundays, Fish and Gamtoos (Actually, probably all the streams) 

Catch them and Moggel by chumming the water and using a cast net will work.  If you want to use a bait then a #8 or #10 hook with some white dough and an earthworm

The yellows in your area are not endemic to the area but have spread into the area with Kurper and Catfish through the various water schemes that are used to move water from the Orange river into the irrigation schemes in the Easern Cape. 

The yellows are the Barbus Capensis (Smallmouth Yellowfish)  there are the odd Largemouths and Muddies along with the Moggels.  They have come across from the Gariep Dam and the canals pumping water in via Summerset East.

The regulations pertaining to Bream and Yellows in other parts of the country do not apply in the Eastern Cape and they are not restricted by bag or size limits and are regarded as a pest fish.
