Drop Shot at Impenjati

Hi guys. I'm going to be staying in Southbroom for a few weeks over christmas and really want to try some drop shot. I heard that Impenjati river mouth was good? Could anyone advise me on what lures to use and what species there are to target? Are there any other good drop shot marks (river or sea) from Margate down to Port Edward? Any advice would be greatly appreciated! Cheers

Hi Rico,

I would suggest that you get hold of a 7' spinning rod, in a medium action. The reel in a size 2 or 3 also spinning, with a good front drag system and instant anti reverse also must be saltwater resistant. the rod must be good, for using braided line.

I prefer to use braided line as it is thinner than mono and more abrasion resistant too. It also has less stretch, for better bite detection and giving your lure a better action, use the braid with flourocarbon leader, tie it on with a five turn surgion to the braid and make your leader about 60cm long. You sould also try to use 10lbs to 14 lbs Fireline, your knot sould not pass threw your line guides.

Jig head size 1/8oz, 1/4oz to 1/2oz, and in hook sizes from 4 to 1/0.

Soft bait jerkshads 5", minnows in 3",4" and some Berkley CAMO worm and your all set.

Then get your prefered soft bait on the hook, cast out. Try differant retreives and cover ground and your bound to get something, then you just hold on tight.

The stretch of beach from Marina Beach (just south of Southbroom) through to Port Edward can be fairly productive, however, caution is advised due to the high number of muggings - especially on the Trafalgar-Impenjati stretch. The better spots from Margate to Port Edward would be Orange rocks (Ramsgate), Centre Rocks (Marina Beach), Pulpit Rock (Glenmore) and Splash Rock (Port Edward). These would be my choices for Shad and Garrick (Jerk Shads & Minnows). All these spots will require the use of heavier jigheads to obtain the necessary distance. The stretch from Trafalgar to Impenjati is apparently very good for Bronze Bream (Camo Worm). From the lighthouse at Port Edward, heading southwards, is very rocky. Your Camo Worm should be very useful here. Don't cast to the horizon! I have caught small black mussel cracker, stumpnose and crayfish at my feet in foot deep water in these rock gullies. Fishing vertically from these high spots into the gullies will help minimise the loss of jigheads. A walk down any of the sandy stretches, casting into any likely looking sand gullies/rips might well produce Cob or Garrick. Your 3" minnows should get you into three spot Pompano in the shorebreak.

Good luck!

I would consider bringing some of these over. Available from TackleBargains.co.uk .

Thanks for the great advice guys! I've bought some berkley 3" minnows in the chartreuse colour and some worms in the natural colour as they didn't have the camo ones. Has anyone had success with these? Everyone seems to rave about the camo ones

Rico,
I fished the Impenjati with one of the ESA drop shot experts along with all of the clever stuff mentioned above.

On that day we blanked, not even a nibble.

It doesn't mean that the minnows and worms don't work or that you should give up drop shot, it just means there are days like that.

The river just screams fish and given the right conditions it should really work well. I hope to give it another try in a few week's time.

Good luck.

Hi DB,

It's called a Lug worm, it's from Berkley, Gulp and you get them in 4" & 6"
The one in the picture is in Bloody colour.

Other colours to try are Black, Dark brown-Blue fleck, Natural, New Penny and White.

Cheers Van

Mpenjati river can be quite productive, depending on water colour. I fish it off a canoe, up toward the railway bridge. Have caught cob, bigeye kingies, blacktip kingies etc - all on 3" berkley pearl watermelon shad minnows with 1/4 OZ jig heads. Look out for chases along the edge of the river. The flat rock at southbroom lagoon can be quite productive too. Loads of good gulleys on the south end of Southbroom...
Blood / Camo sandworm available in the local shops - try Gremlins / Luckys in Margate.
