Carp, any carp bait works great but mielies work great for bigger carp, put boilies on and the small barbel make you mad. Big fish are closer to opposite bank in deep gutter but if current is strong don't bother casting further than 10m and you will still catch Carp, Grasscarp and huge Muddies.

Barbel, 0.60 hook line and leader as minimum, 0.40mm mainline or 20lbs braid minimum. Hooks double 6/0 trace or 9/0 eagle claw sailfish circle. Best bait Grasscarp head or fillet them platanna the muddie head or fillet and as last resort carp head. The best bait by a long shot is a grass carp. As deep as current allows

I have been to Bloemhof this past weekend and there are millions of :fswim around. Biggest that was caught was a 10Kg barbell. I fishes 17 hours straight through the night for barbell, I used carp heads, fillet and worms for bait. Caught close to 25 barbels by my self but there were no big fish that wanted my baits, my biggest was around 5Kg. If you want to have some fun take a small whipy rod, 1 ounce, 2 x 1/0 hooks baited with worms and you are sure to catch barbels every 10 mins. Put out a nice fillet or head on your heavy stick while you enjoy your light tackle.

I will be back at Bloemhof on the 8th of April to get my monster. Below is what I caught last may at Bloemhof last year May. 15KG

Enjoy!

Big barbel always past the halfway mark. You get them closer but 15-20m from the opposite bank is a sure thing (if the current allows)

In a September Trip I managed 27 Barbel with the smallest 14kg and the biggest 22kg all caught about 2/3 the way across and all on grass carp, whole, heads or fillets.

Go big in that section of river and you will be rewarded, for sure. Best time is normally between 11pm till 3 am and then 4-6 in the afternoon

Thats correct Suhail, there are mases of carp but usally on the bite during the day and Enigma is spot on, for the bigger barbels try to reach the opposite bank but remember go big or go home!

@ Enigma, is there any tips you have to catch grass carp. Baits, traces, how far do you cast and time of day.

We often just go around to the dam and fish near the bridge and take a few of the slow hours in the river to get a few grassies at the bridge

In the river a cast of about 20-30m with a rietvlei trace then Trident and MX on the Bol with a Garlic and flouroscein mallow or floatie, no backing.

But the best option is at the bridge in the dam as the river Grassies now seem to be averaging 1kg+

Hi guys

Sorry for the late reply , my trip was AWESOME !!! Caught loads of carp and barbel , no grass carp or muddies , the carp bit on everything and anything , the smallest was about 2kg and my biggest was a beauty at 6.7 kg .... The small barbel drove us nuts during the night , I was shocked as they even took on tiger nuts !! But one I threw in my barbel line with the plattie I didn't get a chance to sit , my biggest was 13 kg ...... I'll try to post some pics during the week , distance didn't really matter at night , but in the day the bigger carp were definitely further , overall it was a great trip , I'm even planning on heading there again during Easter , thanks for all the tips guys

Hi Enigma, what section is best for fishing barbel - closer to dam wall or further away?

Hi Danie, having been to Die Hoek generally closer to the wall is better. Just be prepared for a lot of snags throughout that section.
