Depth of barbel

Hi all you Mr Wiska fans,

There was another post regarding this, but it did not answer the question.

What depth do big barbel hang out in. I know they come to the shallows to feed at night. But if you are on a boat, what depth would one target. Inanda dam goes up to 150ft in some places, especially towards the dam wall :wfish.

I have had success 3 weekends in a row between 15-30ft, and was wondering if the bigger fish would be in the deeper water. Do barbel hang around structure like bass, or are they not too fussed?

We've caught them in the Vaal to depths of 30' but I think as with the majority of freshwater fish 6-12meters would be better depths.

I don't think there are that many fodder fish for them at depths past 36' as the water is way to cold.

They definitely like to be around structure and that's why if you want big barbel go for big tackle.  When targeting fish over 25kg I go with 80lbs braid, 1mm leaders to to prevent bust-ups on structure.

On our farm on the vaal i have caught the biger barbel in the middle of the river +- 14 meter strong current

But i have also caught a few whoppers in the shallow water next to structure
