Deka Drum fishing camp

This was the first place I went Tiger fishing back in 1998 and the fishing was awesome. The camp itself is completely run down from what I hear and you won't get access to boats. A real pity as it was such a great little setup in the day. I am heading to a lodge south of Deka in October and looking forward to it. We fished the waters just outside deka last year and above and below and the fishing was good. Upstream there were some monster fish taking our lures and a vundu so big it tried to eat the propeller of the boat! I dont think Deka drum will be ideal for accomodation but things could have changed? Sundowner is just next door and can probably offer good accom - I havent been there but I have heard about it
Dodger, Deka Drum is totally run down and the facilities are almost nonexistent. You would be better off at Hwange Angling, which is just upstream if you have your own boat, you can always hire a local guide or Sundowner if you want to hire boats and guides. There are also lodges downstream in Masuna, but those guys fish mostly up in the Deka area. The area is great but is suffering from drift netting by local Zambians that are targeting the tigerfish. As with all tiger fishing your timing is important, ideally from when it starts to warm up to just before the local rains muddy the water. I have fished this area for a few years now and have had our best catches in September and October.
Toddy, we spin with large spinners like Meps Agela Long in #5s. Silver blades and red and yellow bodies work well in that area. Then we do a bit of trawling with 11cm Rapala Magnums when the spinning goes quiet in Blues, Fire tigers and Silver. Drift bait has produced fish but there is always a danger of injury unless you are using circle hooks. Make sure you replace the split rings and the hooks on all spinners and lures.
Heading to Ngwenya on Msuna Island which is not too far away from Deka. Heading there on 29 sep to 6 oct. Yip we trawled near the gorge with deep diving raps and had some massive bites but landed nothing. We went a bit too early last year (1 Sep) so hopefully this year they bite like crazy. Yes i got back last night ,The fishing went well,I got the biggest tiger .The fishing is difficult but if you work you will get them.We were the most sucsesful with cappie,(ancker your boat just down from Ings Island in the channel put a mberi orr kappenta on small split shot let out about 40m and wait.Trawling the the best by far were the red head SALMO,and bream,also the silver deep diver all by Salmo.If you like you can phone me on my cell.0832650238.Regards
