Saturday evening I made a trip to the bay after reports that fishing in the bay had really improved, but we had forgotton about the chemical spill in the bay after the fire at the Island View Storage Facility and  the strong smell from the fire was still very evident.

I saw at least 2 dead fish floating during the trip but there were reports of over 125 dead fish immediately after the fire.

Needless to say fishing was extremely slow but I did pick up a stumpie of about 2.5 kg's and lost another when it burned off on the anchor rope, another 3 grunters were landed but only 2 made the legal size. Eels were a regular menace throughout the trip with over a dozen being hooked.

Hopefully the spill was not too serious and the water quality improves quickly.

No one seems to know exactly what caused the fire in one of the holding tanks containing toxic chemicals which spread to other tanks aided by strong winds.

The main area affected by the leakage was the area west of DBS, but depending on wind and tides I am sure the entire bay is affected.

The reason i have asked you this question Khani,is because i often fish the beaches next to the south pier,(sloanes and ansteys),and wanted to know if these areas were affected as well.the marine life would require years to repair itself from such devistation.:(

Hey Free_life143
I fish mainly the area in front on the Harbour entrance (Coaling dump and Granite block) and sometime the basin when I need shelter from the SW.

Hey Poizn

The powers that be claim that the enviromental risks are minimal, if we can believe that, because the entire event has been clouded in a shroud of secrecy, the public still does not know what chemical caught on fire and leaked into the harbour. Hopefully its chemical thats easily diluted with no lasting effects.
