coated braid

I was wondering can you use coated braid as a leader when casting for max distance or will it not work. I was thinking of using coated braid and just to strip the end where you tie your mainline and your swivel. Your comment on this will be much appreciated

Rather stick to either normal braid, or flourocarbon as a leader, the cost, per metre is cheaper than coated braid, plus the fact that due to the stiffness of coated braid, even with a backlead, the leader will not lay flat on the bottom following the contours of the dam bed.

my 2c.

:thankie for the advice will keep it in mind. never thought about the way it would lie on the lake floor. make sense

For conventional the laying flat is not the key.

Will wait till Monday to hear what the final decision was regarding the possible banning of Braid Leaders in all SAFBAF angling, as well as the decision on minimum line diameters

Yes it will be written into the rules and use of Braid as a leader will result in immediate disqualification.

It is applicable to Bank Angling and will still be allowed in competition carp angling and feeder angling.

Line pollution and the building up of line on snags in the water as a result of the light lines we fish over long distances. They had the idea to try limit bank angling to a minimum line diameter of 0.25mm but the unions opposed it.

Braid leaders left behind on many snags in a water float up more than nylon does causing repeated snagging in the same area building up the snagging and making a venue unfishable

This happened in the Bloemhof sloep where at the Junior SA's last year we had to physically clean each swim and where the amount of line and weights we took out of each swim was just ridiculous. Up to 300kg of line and weights on 1 swim probably 10km of line and leaders with over 500 traces (per swim)

wow that realy sucks. how big is the differance on your casting distance when you fish maximun distance and cannot use a braid leader as to  when you can use a braid leader

Nothing, in fact some people with fast cast will be better off with nylon.

If you have a line that winds up then it will not be advantaged as it would be if you had a braid leader

sorry i am a bit confused. i though braid leader is used to get extra distance from the cast if it is not what is the use of a braid leader then

Loads rod easier in slow cast

Primary was because it is thinner and softer it prevents line winding up so bad.

Have you measured your casts on a field, same rod and reel one with braid leader one with nylon leader to see what the difference is.

Mine, no difference in distance but in Grass ridden water I prefer braid as it cuts through the grass.
