Just picked up on this thread now...

180M with 0.55mm and 1.2mm leader & 7oz sinker is amazing casting....:clap12

I don't think I could ever throw that far with such heavy line.

At the moment my PB is 165M with 0.35 and 0.75 and 5.25oz

I don't know if I will ever be sliding baits out into the sea, but I'll have to try the heavier setup in the field someday, just to see if I can manage 100M :D

Hey Kev, I think more importantly to note, that there are organised casting comps that are held both locally and internationally....where the sole aim to cast the weight as far possible...using anymeans necessary...the starting "good" distnace would be nothing under 250m.

The real trick is that "in the real world" when u actually fishing, there is no ways you would use the same casting tackle to do your fishing. The trick is find what tackle suits the fish u targeting, and then marry that with your best casting abilities. If fish are feeding very out then u would have to scale down, but to a point where u mostly likley to loos the fish cause your line diameter strength is something akin to fishing with cotton.

Just out of interest what large fish species do u guys target of the beaches of Ireland?

cheers

Hi AD,

2 of the guys in my club are Irish International casters... I'm only just starting. For myself I am doing it to improve my technique so I can use it on the Beach.
250 Meters is at the top end of International casting and there are not many guys that can hit that range consistantly.

I totally agree, that in the real fishing world, things are totally different, and it's very interesting to see that you guys have casting comps that resemble your fishing. I have a casting reel that I could never use for fishing as it would be too fast and I would have a birdie (over run) on every cast. I'll post a pic in the next day or two.

For ourselves, The biggest fish we can hope for off the shore would be a small shark species. We call them Tope. I think you guys also get them. Off the shore the range from 1Kg to 20Kg. The closer you get to 20Kg and over, the more rare the catch.

No raggies, Cows or Bronzies for us, Which is why I'd love a Job in Cape Provence.... Then again, I'd only be sacked for fishing while I should be working. ;)

Cool, the Tope if I'm not mistaken is what we call a Hound shark....instead of "teeth" it has rows of rasp like teeth.

Hey, I stay 600km's away from the sea....(I would probably be sacked too...)

AD, you be right as far as a Tope being a Houndshark...

It actually forms part of the Houndshark family - Triakidae, which species also include the Spotted Gully shark, the smooth houndshark and the Soupfin shark.

The TOPE shark (overseas name) generally refers to our Soupfin shark aka Vaalhaai. It's extensively exported from SA by commercials and is often made into "Shark biltong".

"Shark biltong".

Wow... didn't think there would be a market. Are they a common shark species in SA?

Would love to catch one from the shore if possible.

We catch lots of Vaalhaai / Tope / Soupfins from the shore in the cape during our winter. I would say the average size would be around 18 kilos with fish over 20kg's being common.......here's one of about 16 kilos i got last weekend!

Nice fish Weeds.... I'd say you would get a nice fight from them off the shore. I know over here they do like to run....

My fishing would be totally different. I don't slide baits. With 0.35 & 0.75 leader 5oz and 2 small baits I could hit the 140m. I think with the setup weeds uses, I might make the 100M maybe 110M.
