Casting Practise

I've read alot about casting on sealine so I decided to go down to the surf and have a few throws. I initially intended on the pendulum cast but the spool kept on slipping resulting in an early release and the cast went all wrong.

So I decided not to bring the lead all the way back towards/past me and that seemed to work fine.

Here is a clip of the cast. Sorry for poor quality (used a cellphone). Anyway I would appreciate any comments/suggestions/tips.

Looks like you getting more height , with the lead further back and more pwer in your hips you will get a far greather distance, you have to use the power of your whole body

i would lenghten the drop of your leader..that would also give you more distance on the cast...but after been shown how to do the pendulum cast i must say you get the same distance from off the ground cast and it is much easer to get rite..

I agree. it is easier but not always practical when fishing from the rocks

@tuna: Thanks for the advise. When you say I should get the lead further back, do you mean away from me/sea or towards the sea. My understanding of the pendulum is that you 1st swing the lead away from you and then back towards and past you, then you cast.

it only really works if you are casting a sinker out for sliding..but the biggest problem with the pendulum cast is the area you need to swing your rod..we did try a few other methods that worked almost aswell and it all came down to the length of your leader and the rotation of your body.

Hi Spotted Grunter

I've got a very similar casting technique. The advantage of this cast is that you can cast accurately cast after cast and "work" the same spot. The chance of an overwind is also less on this tecnique and as you rightfully said this is ideal where space is limited and there are a couple of guys around you.

On the down side...you lose some distance vs. the pendulum boys.

I practice a lot and manage to come close to the pendulum boys on any given day. I would increase the drop length further. I would love to learn the pendulum cast though...it just feels unnatural to me at this stage..like a proper golf swing...

Which other methods work well?

To increse body rotation should I start at say 200/220 degress rather then 180?

@ants If you have some pics or vids please upload... Wanna see how the pros do it..:)

that would be better because it gives you more rotation and to start your cast when the sinker swings in towards your body ..it almost gives the same effect as pendulum casting but takes up less space..but the only problem is that you get alot more load on your rod and sinker speed so if it is done wrong then comes the overwinds....but a bit of practice it will work...
