I DONT KNOW ALOT ABOUT DEEP SEA AT VIDAL BUT EVERY TIME THAT I HAVE BEEN THER I HAVE SEEN BOATS COME IN WITH GIGANTIC FISH. A LOT OF SAILS AND COUTA.
SOORY COUDNT BE OF MORE HELP BUT IF YOU WANT INFO ON R AND SURF FISHING JUST LET ME KNOW. I FREQUENT VIDAL VERY OFTEN, AM LEAVING FOR VIDAL TOM AT 2.

At Vidal, directly in front of the Camp site & log cabins is Vidal Bay. To the right of the bay, the South ledges start - 100-200m away. These ledges extend for about 20km down past Mission Rocks, almost all the way to St Lucia.
The south ledges that are more famous are the ones directly in front of (and slightly to the North) of the Vidal [highlight= #ffff88]lighthouse[/highlight], which is only 2km down from the main bay.
Thats where you gotta fish at Spring lows.

The winter gamefish run at Cape Vidal can be excellent. It is somewhat dependent on what happens with the sardine run. After the sardine run the fish return back up north and they get funnelled through the relatively narrow continental shelf at Vidal and Sodwana. A lot of very large, fattened up fish can be caught at that time in those areas, eg. couta in the upper 20s and even lower 30 kgs.
While the sardine run is on you are wasting your time going up there, though. Then the fish are concentrated along the Transkei coast and up to Durban. Give it two to three weeks after the sardines disappear at Durbs and then head up to Vidal. You are sure to have some luck.

hey just came from vidal on sunday with no luck.(first time with no catch)in fact the guys told me to give it up if i cant catch a fish in vidal il never catch anywhere.
just opposite the log fishing cabins is the vidal bay ps. fish in the incoming water and outgoing. when the tide is out you have to wade the banks of vidal.
the bay is excellent for stumpies and grunter,
further down are the south ledges. this extend around 30 km south. the fishing at the ledges are perfect. i have personally cawt lovely stumpies and have seen stumpies,pomis come out like. the best time to fish is the low tide,stand on the ledge and throw in the deep,
another good spot is direct opposite the lighthouse.
