Evening Gents.

We r going offshore spinning in st Lucia for 4 days the second week in December.

Now i have started to meddle a bit in the fine art of lure making.

First problem i have is finding buck tail in Pretoria?

Below is a couple a made with feathers:

Do you guys think these feathered friends of mine stand a chance to catch anything??

i will eventually make some proper buck tail ones once i find buck tail or a suitable alternative.

Another pick of some simple ball sinkers painted, through wire with a squidy skirt.

Very nice! I think those buck tails are going to go away very quickly! I especially like those "Inchiku" style ball jigs. Can you tell us how you made them?

Thx bennie,

Its quite simple. The ball sinkers has a little "ferule" at the back and i bought it from a little local tackle shop one day when i was bored.

all i did was put a stainless wire through the ball and tied loops at both ends. painted the sinker with nail varnish.

Took some store bought small squidy skirts and nipped the front end, applied some glue and slipped it over the "ferrule". bobs your uncle.

Thinking about doing the hook assist style, otherwise i will just hook it up with a split ring.

Do you guys think that i should just go with the feathers and dont even bother with buck tail??

Cheers

HV, the only place in PTA you might find bucktail is Solly's opposite the Waterglen centre in Garsfontein Road, a place where you will defs get is Mia's in Woodmead.

The feathers will work but just remember that they become very thin in profile in water and even moreso when retrieving speed increases, but those should work, the colours are )as far as I know) correct.

Thanks! Will give it a bash!

Good advice LGF! Although I think he has compensated nicely with "a lot" of feathers. If you make a bucktail that dense, you battle to get it down.

Good work!

Dumb newbie question: Will bucktails work for bass fishing or are they limited to lure fishing in the ocean?
Sorry, I have no idea!
I reckon our best bet for an answer is probably going to be LGF. ^^..

Ok, I posed the question on the www.bassing.co.za site as well and aparently they do work for bass as well! I'll be ordering my mould within the next week...

Here's my take on them. Looking at Jigs and spinners, what is so diffirent between them and a bucktail, which is strangely enough called a Bucktail Jig (full name) so the only diffs really is the deerhair skirt instaed of the normal silicone skirts we strap onto a jig or a spinner, so will they work? Yes they will, colours will play the part of making it a sucessful or not lure. Also the action that you impart on it should be virtually the same as with a normal jig.

Sooory guys,

I made a little mistake in my first post. our trip was second week of October and not December.

Anyways,we had a sweet trip that will give us all very fond memories for years to come.

I will post some pics off some off the catches with comments.

Firstly 2 pics off my trophy for the trip. Yellow spotie on my very own buck tails pictured above made from feathers:

Other mate taking stick from a weighted 17kg tunie on a berkley air 9ft with stradic 6000. 45min fight:

Group fodie of the sesamie street pirates with some tunie. Special thing that day was we had a 6 up and landed every single fish. Pitty our skipper and new friend Johan couldnt have been in the pic:

This was a beauty of a trip and we r already planning for February!

Again we would then use only artificials.

Enjoy
