Brighton Pier

I woke up this morning with cuts on my hands , my back feeling like a bus had decided to park on it overnight and my legs not really wanting to work.....but the smile on my face was from ear to ear.

If you guys are like me fishing is so much more than just going and catching a fish , its about the experience .

After the Pier had been very alive the last few days and Myself , Trophy , KT and OD went down to the pier for a though ( sorry to the other that i didnt catch your names but treated me like you had known me for years :) , that's fisherman and why i love this so much )
I got there a bit late and had to laugh when i got to the pier and counted 15 rods in the water.....wow the smoke signals reached far today:)
I get to the water and get told that the rays are thick but nothing else really .
I ask around what people have out and get told there are 5 swimbaits out! lol this was going to be interesting.

I set up my gear but just send out a elf , no swimbait for me thanks i like my tackle :). at this point it was starting to get dark and the elf had come on thick and the guys got there light stuff out and we all had a good elf smash while we waited .
Not 10min went by and i was on to a small diamond and the guy behind me laugh saying that thats all there is out there today.
Needless to say he was right......loads and loads of diamonds , every cast a diamond ( at least we had plentiful swimbaits haha)
It was at this point trophy went into a nice large diamond of over 200cmm wingspan , So the walk start for him and of he goes. I am standing the smashing the elf and a swimbait reel screams like there was no tomorrow and them stops.....nothing. he leaves the bait out for a while then checks it , the diamond was still perfect , maybe a shark swam into the line? who knows.
At this pint trophy gets back and i ask about the ray and he says it was out as bait..... i almost fell off the pier a 200cm bait 66 odd kg!!! In the words of Russel Peters " somebodys going to get a hurting"
Not 30min goes by and trophys line goes slack , everything gone...Rag maybe swam into the line? now what are the chances that again. lol.
At this point another guy on the pier goes into a nice size bag of 190cm , he was alone so i lended a hand and walked with him to help get her out and take a few pics for him.

I got back to more of the same , loads of diamonds every cast but OD's line hadnt been touched , whats going on .
We decide to put a live elf out and wait. Next thing his rod bounces twice and goes slack and i ask what up and get the aweful news "the fish is off" wait......"FISH ON!!!"
it had made a bolt for the pier and swam underneath it .
this was now going to be a battle , the line was through he pier and bought 20m on the other side and the " can u see it " starts. "Its a diamond" gets shouted , no " its a shark" then i think it hit everyone at one THAT WAS NO SHARK!!!! That was one of the biggest cob i have ever seen!!! OD played the fish well in a very very touch spot and started to get it back through the pier. You could cut the tension with a knife , no leader and braid across pillars ,i was scared . He got it through the first set of pillars then it went to the next and then it happened , probably the worst feeling in the world .... the braid got cut off :( :( It was always going to be a very hard catch with the pillars and it was luck on the day and he well. It was a roughly 40kg Cob.
All of us felt his pain and i still feel it , we have all been int hat same position and as we all know lady luck sometimes likes us and sometimes doesnt.

We carry on and trophy goes onto a rag ( not sure on the size) and i decide to put out a shark fillet.
Not long and i am on, head sharks and a nice size YAY no more rays.
It pulled like a train and i started the long walk .
I didnt realize at the time but i was told i was gone over and hour lol, but at the end landed a new PB male rag of 199cm.

As KT and Trophy were leaving OD got SMASHED by what we think was a rag , it even breached , but dropped the bait.
OD was not having a good night....

We decided to end it shortly afterwards.
As i said at the start I fish for the experience and the fish are the bonus and thanks to great group of guys on the pier last night i got an Experience of a lifetime and a trip i wont ever forget, OD i will still be tilling my grand-kids about that cob m8.
The new PB and the flatfish were a nice bonus to the whole experience.
Lets hope we can have many many more!!
THANKS GUYS FOR A AWESOME NIGHT!!
anyone else have pics?
Thanks
Ant

Leka sports man. Jinne only a couple more days and I'm there. Then there's gonna be trouble. Whooohooo.

Another mate of mine got spooled on a trini 50 a few nights ago on the pier. :fbash:fbash

Hope my tor50 can hold :wfish

HIya Koper,

No Zambie as yet...but King Neptune knows I'm trying! LoL

We had a awsome night on the Pier...

It started out with a smash of small Shad which we all enjoyed catching. Like small kids we all grabbed out spinning sticks and like Blue Gill in a Bass dam had some great fun!

They were not big fish, but between baited lines, spoons and surface poppers we had a blast!

Here is KT and I with a quick double up! Love the caps!

When KT and I got to the Pier there were already two swim baits out with Albatros and Michael Minaar set out with Diamonds.

I rigged a Makkie bait on a light bite trace and withing minutes there were three.

KT only took a heavy rod and a spinning stick and bummed a Diamond from Michael's mate from KZN...soon there were four swim baits looking for that Zambie! Burned off you have started something again...good on you!!

When the lights went out the Shad stopped taking lures so I rigged a Slide baits and put it out for a raggie with some nice Hammer fillets I collected on Sat morning.

Was not long and the Okuma Cedros 15 went away with a nice pull. The result...mu first Raggie on the Cedros. I remain impressed by this 30 sized reel.

Another chap, don't know his name went tight with a nice raggie just before mine...AntV has those pics and I'm sure he will post them.

Diamonds still gale and with my swim bait tired I brought it in and released it. Baited up another Makkie on the light trace...light for the pier... and went tight straight away.

This time on my old faithful L&F custom Sharky and my old TOR 30. I have not fished this setup for ages and it was nice to give them a test drive.

My fish was heavy and gave me a lekker back breaking trip down the pier. The nett result was a BUS of a Diamond. In the rush to pin him to a swim bait trace I did not take measurements.

Got him swimming well into the bay and my rod dips a few times and pop goes my main line. Minutes later Albatross suffers the same fate but gets a blistering run first. Our thoughts...a fish trailing a slide trace around swam into the lines!

I only took one 30m 1.8m Wind-on and 400lb swimbait trace so that was that for the bait swimming for me.

I go back to catching Shad on the spinning rod when all hell breaks loose. OD is onto something BIG. But that's a story they must tell!

Change of plans for me...as I pin a live Shad to a throw bait trace and send it in to the LHS side of the Pier.

Few minutes later my reel takes off and after some heart thundering 'head shakes' my catch turns out to be another Diamond that has swallowed the live Shad whole.

I stick my hands down and manage to get my rig back and in goes another live Shad. Same MO and the fight is again full of hope until...sadly another Diamond! Again the hooks are right down the throat and this time I cannot get them free. Snip of the trace and decide that enough is enough.

KT and I head for home at 12am leaving AntV and OD to try and take revenge on the ONE THAT GOT AWAY!

Thanks for a great night of fishing with great company!

Hiya Oliver,

...long time no see?

Ja that was a very sad moment when you lost that fish! Dont feel alone, ask Adrian about the 50kg Kob he 'lost'a while ago. LoL

I recon he still wakes up in cold shivers calling for it! Ha Ha
