Boskop Dam

Hi all

We went to Boskop dam near potch at the end of November for a short 1 night trip. To sum it up, it was not good from a fishing pt of view. We got there late Sat afternoon, just after sunset a huge storm came through.

Just about th roughest storm I have experianced in a tent! Still, having great company with you makes any situation fun, so my 3 uncles, my brother, cousins and even my 5 yr old neice still had a blast.

Finally the rain stopped at about 10.30 but the wind blew the whole night. This didnt make for easy fishin n it was quite cold, which i think impacted the fishing. Very few bites, and only my uncle managed a carp of 1,5 kg.

Went to sleep at 2, and up again at 5. Conditions looked better, and my uncle had managed another small carp, so I was optimistic. No sooner than I had recasted my rods, did the wind start again and did not stop for the whole day. I tried a few different dips and baits, but nothing seemed to work.

Anyways, the 1 positive is that i got to try out my new baitboat ::S

I have the best wife, i have been trolling the classifieds for a 2nd hand one for a long time,n she then decided to surprise me by buying one. With a fishfinder as well! She really is the best.

So i was a bit worried of using it with all the wind, but eventually tried it. What really amazed was finding out the following. I always thought of boskop as a deep place, when wading in within 10 m or so, it would be up to my waist. So i always assumed at 30m, it was at least 2 m deep. With the fishfinder, i found the deepest part was about 5m from the opposite reed bed, and this was the only place with a concentration of fish, and it was only 2.4m deep.

So although i dropped a few baits which didnt result in fish, the lesson i learnt is that casting blindly thinking you know whats underneath doesnt pay. Do the homework, n placing the baits in the right areas will result in more fish.

Hey Grassy,

Few questions:
1. Which side did you fish? Inlet or Naturama?
2. Any issues with snags?
3. Are there ablutions? Powerpoints?

Hi Jason

Fished the inlet, no issues with snags. There was some watergrass but not too bad. No powerpoints here, and only longdrops. The only flush toilet is at the main entrance.

Look over th yrs i have found many better places to fish with better facilities, but this place is close to my heart, its where I learnt to fish. So every once in a while, i will brave the elements and the possibilty of blanking just to pay it a visit. And i maintain, Boskop has the best looking yellowfish, so when you catch them, its really worth it.

Cheers
