Boat Wiring: Durban

Hi guys, need to find where I can get my boat wired properly in Durban.

Had new motors fitted, went to sea and the following happened:

Fishfinder not working, sent it to Pertec and they found the unit to be in 100% working  order.

All electrical, nav lights, live bait pump etc will only work with ingnition turned on

Batteries and fuses are fine, so that leaves wiring!

Howzit China,
How Jo'burg treating you?

Sounds to me they have taken power from the ignition instead of a seperate power supply from the battery to supply the electronics. This can also be a problem if power is taken from both batteries.

I couldn't recommend anyone because I do my own wiring... I don't trust anyone. Even when Ali-Cat was brand new, the first thing I did was pull the wiring out and start over.

That said, the wiring isn't too difficult so you could speak to any auto elec and they could do it for you.

You may have to point out the following though:

Power to all electronics should only be supplied by one battery. Run a single power supply all the way to the consol where power can be taken from. Over rate the cable so you won't have hassles with the sounder and any future add ons.
All connections are best soldered and protected with heat shrink. Suggest the actual heat shring be as long as possible. I allow 50mm each side of the joint.
Fuses should be easily accessable.
The connection of the wires on the live well pump should be protected with a resin sealed joint.
The GPS, All round light, navigation lights, live well pump, deck lights and radio should each be on their own switch.
The switches should be water proof (sealed) units.
Ideally you want them to use silver plated wiring.

Good luck
Bennie

Make sure they put a fuse on that single power wire [AT THE BATTERY IT SELF] that is running to your consol. This way you know if there is a short the wire wil not burn in to your loom and damage the moter wires. Also tel them to run your transduser cable seperit and away from the rest of the power cables. The electic cable do cause a inteferince with some transduser cables that are not sheelded properly. Just my 2c.
