Hi has anyone ever caught a blunt toothed catfish before or does anyone have pictures. I think I may have caught 1 don't know for sure it could have just been a deformed barbel

Very, Very scarce in SA, possibly eastern part of Limpopo but in Mozambique and fish researchers have found individual fish in Pongola and Komati rivers

I've never seen one but is is much like the Sharptooth but with smaller tooth plates and more pronounced adipose fin

Small fish averaging 1kg with max recorded weight 4kg

Most prevalent in the Quanza, Zambezi and Kunene rivers and the also in the Okavango delta

It has helped being a provincial records officer for 10 years and a 6 year stint as SA Bank Angling Records officer

Fishbase is a good source of information.

Trying to explain the differences is like trying to explain the difference in the small mouth and small scale yellow.  In description there's not a massive difference but seeing the 2 in real life and the difference it immediately apparent, even though subtle

I have caught them in the lower Phongola river - but guys it is really very hard to distinguish between the two rather put the fish back before it waffers -
They don't grow nearly as big as the sharptooth and they donot fight as hard...... These are great pack hunters like their cousins

I think I caught one at footloose trout farm thats why I am a bit suspicious it has a wierd shaped head there was like a lump and it was very thin. I dont know if this is a result of poor management of the fish population and in-breading occurs or maybe one managed to hitch a ride with a bird or if someone released one in there. I will try and post a pic tomorrow

Probably a sharp tooth that is infected with parasites

They wouldn't be able to survive up here as a result of the temp being lower than the minimum they would survive in hence them only being in waters above the Tropic of Capricorn or in Northern KZN sub-tropical areas.

Would like to the pic and maybe Ryan can confirm or not.

I would say a skinny Sharp tooth on that one. Typical body and head pattern of the Orange river catfish, big head thin body.
