Blind garrick!

At the end off september 06 at blue lagoon an elderly man in his 70's was fishin for shad..as darkness came he prepared to leave an cast out to set his line on his reel.after puttin a shot in an preparing to retrieve somethin picked up his SHAD TRACE with NO BAIT an belted for the backline! After much tussling he landed a 15kg+ garrick! Prob the catch off a lifetime at his age! Amazing right???..

Actually the angler in question is known as Smiler (real name Ismail) and is a legend at Blue Lagoon, Durban and is probably in his late 80's. He actually caught it on a white bung shad trace which would have looked like a lure/plug to the Garrick. Whats more amazing is given his aches and pains that he still angles at every given opportunity.  Regards

Yep, it was Smiler.

He is very old and truely a legend at Blue Lagoon. He has taught me many things when it comes to angling, and in fact is the person that taught all Blue Lagoon anglers the difference between normal mullets and greenback mullets. He taught me this trick as well. Greenbacks are more active in the water and they tend to attract Garricks a lot faster.

The Garrick Smiler caught on that particular day was too much for his old and weathered body to handle, so he handed his rod to another angler who assisted him to land the big fish.

Smiler does fish every opportunity he gets, and is at Blue Lagoon almost every day. And is always there to offer advice. He even helped me on the day I landed my big Sandy at the lagoon.

Here's to Smiler. Who knows how long he will be with us, but I truely feel he is a legend.
