HI,

We have many guys comming here with the wrong list so hopefully this list finds those that are searching for this information....

Must haves....

Copper Effzett Spoons guys use up to 9 a day 22 and 33 grams

The double bladed ones work just as well if not better

Silver is a close second but copper is defs the stuff

Stiff Rod - I have been using a 7'6 Crucial heavy and it is too light - Some guys have come with GLoomis extra heavy travel rods and these are the business but they cost a bit of tin....

Reels.

2 come to mind.

Stella 5000 SW

Calcutta 250DC

I have broken 4 reels since I have been here 4weeks.

Split rings 60lb

4/0 and 5/0 VMC with the big eyes

42lb Paino wire or nylon coated steel trace.....

Hope this helps for now

Cheers

Ryan

Naah it is a diawa -won't last

I have 2 reels that have passed the 10year mark and did as much Light Salt/ Tiger /Muskie /Walleye as can be fit into each year

Abu Ambassadeur C6500 paired with a 7ft Heavy 3oz Daiwa Hearland Rod & 6500 Big Game paired with a 7ft 3oz Quantum Bluerunner.

they will be going up to the Zambezi the 5th time next year after they complete the yellowtail season during Nov-Mar-touch wood

In terms of travel roads i looked at the Gloomis nice rod.

I opted for the St Croix tidemaster 7ft 3 piece meduim travel rod, very happy so far. The reel i use is a Shimano spheros 4000 with 50lb viper braid. I always include a few jigs in my tiger arsenal and have caught many big fish with them. Enjoy guys!

I am by no means an expert, but when I fished the Barotse earlier this year I felt that we are “over tackled” for Tigerfish.

They are great fighters and certainly hit the bait with aggression but we agreed that more bites were on lighter tackle than heavy.

When spinning with a extra heavy rod, 5000 reel and 50lb line the casting distance can be 30% less than and lighter rig, that is less time in the water for the lure and more fatigue on the fisherman. You can increase your chances of a bite by fishing lighter.

I accept that it is expensive to go fishing in the Barotse; you want to be the best prepared and space is limited on the aircraft. I would recommend at least 2 options, a heavy rod, reel, line combination, and medium /heavy rod with a 4000 and 30lb braid.
If space allows next year I will take my light G Loomis traveller spinning rod, 3000 Stella and 20lb braid.

Could not agree more. The magic of a Tigerfish is its super strength and aggressive fighting on light tackle but light tackle is relative to conditions- there is no art in catching them with super stiff jigging rods, and big reels. Any MH-H 1-2oz 6,6-7ft will work ok on tigers.

the heavier action and 1.5-2oz rods to troll 11cm plugs big Effzet Spoons. 1-1.5 Oz rods will cast any lure that will work on Tigers

paired with a 4000 size reel or low profile baitcaster.
150-200m line.

Ask about conditions because when streams come into play its nice having a slightly heavier rod (2-3oz)MH to fight
fish from upstream or guide them out of reed beds.

Braid: call me old fashioned but I have ever caught them on 10-12lb Mono , Maxima as a Student and fancy Stren /Berkley lateley I like the flex in the line to absorb that first run.

I carry a file in my pocket at all times and hooks have to be sticky sharp /bone piercing sharp.

I usually carry 4 rods 1xtrolling , 1x Casting 1x Livebait 1x Bream. Trolling /Livebait is my 2 Abu's and casting is 2x 4000 size Shimano Solstace.

but there is a few new toys on the market making my arse itch. Stradic 5000fj, Daiwa procaster, Curado 300EJ,

My tuppence worth from an outstanding lower Zambezi trip with a lot of big fish :
Stella4000 with a MH sea bass rod 8' and braid of20 lbs
My friend caught a good number of big double figure fish on my spare Stradic 3000 with ease
The lighter kit was easy to use use all day long especially using lures and consistently outcast the other gear used. Not outgunned by the fish.
Will have to put my money where my mouth is and explore Barotseland next!!

I have had8the privilege to fish many different bodies of water for tigers - I spent year in barotse fishing full time. and2 years full timeline thelower zambezi.
trust me when I say the tigers are something else in barotse.... if you have only fished .sa for tigers then you will haven idea of what I am talking about.
that river is 14 km upstream of Baroque tiger camp - full of rocks but an awesome place to fish.
