Had a big family gathering at the Vaal River just downstream from the Balkfontein water works.
Had a ball all day Saturday catching all sorts of species on artlure, but the catfish eluded me.
Had a +/- 20cm grass carp (one of plenty we caught on lure and fly that day) that I kept for bait.
I could've cast it all in whole, but decided to divide it into 3 baits: the head with dangling bits of gut (yum!), body section and tail section.
I rigged the head first with the biggest hook (think a #1 or #1/0 Mustad baitholder) I had handy by hooking it through the upper lip and out the top of skull.
Within half an hour something showed interest and began playing with my bait. My dobbertjie moved up and fell down a couple of times before the culprit finally began taking off slowly.
I gave a solid strike and landed this 3.75kg cat on my 7 foot MH spinning setup with 10lb mono.
Proper hook set in the corner of its mouth.
My son wanted in on the photo action. Can still see the squashed small grassie head, that pushed up the line, dangling on my knee.
The body bait from the grassie got a bit of interest from something small but no takers, and the tail section no interest at all.
Fun way to end the day's fishing.
