Was wondering if I chum water with blood or livers how long does it usually take to get the catfish attention?

depends on the size of the dam, direction of current and location of fish, but i've seen barbel come to a smell from around 5m away in about 5mins. had a favourable wind and current pushing the smell away from the bank...

i've also read tips where people advised that you chum a spot the night before... works best when camping or staying at the dam.

Interesting post

Check with some of the Light Tackle Boat (LTB) anglers,I stand to be corrected but they have a practice of "chumming" an area the day before Freshwater compo's.I was put under the impression that they do this mainly for barbel with various bio-degradable products, and with great success.

Good luck

jep you can chum up , small ponds very succesfully , and then you can also 'call' the barbel we use it for flyfishing , slash your rod tip around in the water , they soon come check whats the comotion is about !

Chumming for barbel works well and quickly. Small chunks of any flesh works well. Too much fat causes it to float away this is no good. Barbel also like stuff that is rotten.

If you have the guts and ..uhmmm ...stomach, then you can chum by throwing in an (slightly wrotten) ox-head (weighted down) ... I know the LTB guys do that during comps sometimes...

When we go LTB fishing, we get 4 20l buckets, and fill them with a mix of oats, yeast powder, beer, Dog Pellets, Chicken livers, Chopped up cow liver and heart and fill with water.
Seal the buckets and leave outside for 2 days, before use. Remenber to release the gas build up every now and again, or you going to end up chumming your back yard!!

I dont like letting it stand for to long and get to rancid, personal belive is that Catfish would eat fresh meat rather than rotten.

Once on the boat we puncher hole's in the lid, and lower them down, two on each side of the boat, this allows it to slowly seep out and release attractant as long as you there.

And then obviously fish the same hoock bait as whats in the barrels.

sounds like a plan...

i was thinking about taking the same stuff and freezing it into a huge ice block with a hole in the middle... then tie it to a spot in the water were i'm going to fish. as it melts it will give off the smell... think it will work?

We artlure anglers does not chum and still gets the big ones. Apart from the costs and effort I think chumming sometimes border on pollution (as well as the carp feeding spots). :(
