Alternative to Salmo Hornets for LM Yellowfish

Hello All,

with the almost total local unavailability for Salmo Hornets for targeting LM Yellows in the Vaal in winter are there any other similar lures that I can look out for?

Did see a recommendation on previous thread for Rebel Grasshopper in Firetiger and Rapala Countdowns.

Anything else???

Found this online. Hope it helps.

ART-LURES FOR YELLOWFISH:

Because there are so many I list those lures that my clients and I have found most productive – I list them in order of importance.

SMALLMOUTH YELLOWS:

3 cm Rapala – sinking –
COLOURS: Clear Water – Natural finish - Black and Silver - Black and gold - Trout finish. Muddy water – Chartreuse - Fire tiger - Fluorescent orange.

Sassy shad – silver and black ; white or yellow.
3cm Rapala – floating – same colours listed.
(Attach small pinch shot 20 cm ahead of lure) – may be used in very shallow pools – little chance of "hook-ups".
Flat Rap Rapalas (Small)
Fish - spinner combinations
Black, Purple and Yellow lead heads
White and Yellow curly tails

LARGEMOUTH YELLOWS:

Shad Rap Rapalas (5 to 8 cm) – Colours as previously listed
Rebel Frog – Yellow and white (5 cm long)
River Runt Artificial lures
Deep diving, floating Fat Rap Rapalas
Big sassy shads
Usual "broken back" Rapalas

The 5cm original balsa Shad Rap is an excellent winter crank for the Vaal LM's. Over the years I have found that in cold water better success is had with small crankbaits without any rattle. In the summer at places like VDK they happily eat most med to small crankbaits meant for Bass, including those with rattles inside. Also in cold water (less than 15C) natural colours, warm water I've had great success with bright colours like chartreuse.

Fish barbless at all times, you'll hook more fish and they don't fall out, also helps with the release obviously

Gentleman thank you for all the replies!

Nic - Thanks for that paste. I will check BM too.

Tombosis - many thanks for that - exactly what I was after!

One more question - Floating or sinking crank baits?

Hokkaido Lures: Mini Killer and Frantic Minnow are also good alternatives if you cant find Salmo hornets.

Got some info, Goya trading the guys that were the distributors of Salmo lures and Marukyu baits in SA has closed down.

If you are prepared to shop offshore (so much more ito sizes and colours) there is a great Polish online retailer - they have an eBay store ihttp://www.ebay.com/itm/SALMO-HORNE...l_Supplies_Labels_LE&var=&hash=item33803a4b56 as well as their own (cheaper) store here http://www.fishing-mart.eu/sklep/en/lureswobblers-g5-a20.html. The Poles are experts in these small wobblers and there are some fantastic, cheap plugs to be had - in Polish terms Salmo is high-end price wise. I've also used the Goldy lures they sell - very good swimmers. The selection will totally blow an artlure angler's mind (and probably budget!).

I managed to find some Salmo Hornets yesterday but one has to scavenge. Hopefully someone will soon redistribute Salmo's in SA because they are devastating for SM and LM yellows.

I've had a lot of success with Strike King's shallow runners. Largies are quite willing to eat bigger baits.

Headzup guys, Salmo is back and will soon be available at most stores. You can also purchase online and they courier all over SA. http://salmolures.co.za/
