good day gents

recently got back into competitive. dusted off my old jl customs and epix bait runners.

rods are feeling very soft for my liking all off a sudden.
looked at the rockets.....any good?

enigma can you offer me an alternative....including 2 good baitrunners.

looking for decent distances....160 odd meters will keep me happy

braid for conentional casting?....any suggestions on type and diameter?

balls are quiet small and heavy (chick chick)
mielie bom balls that is, other balls are very heavy (2 kids)

Hi habib

il give you my 2 cents for what its worth, the sensation Rockets are very good rods and with propper technique you should have no trouble casting 160m, if you can afford the the 13 foot raging bull rods they are even more effective, but can feel a bit stiff and take some getting used to(so im told).

I personally prefer the VXR Rods from Jackel not to expensive and you can get nice distance out of them.

Baitrunners: im not to familiar with all the brands but the shimano XT 6000 and 10000 works for me it is all about balancing it with the rods you have.

good luck and happy fishing

In terms of your braid question, most conventional anglers do not use braid. Some use it for the leader, and I know the Jerry brown 20lb leader has been mentioned on this site before, for that purpose. Not sure about the diameter.

Zane you don't ay which of the JL Customs you have but I agree a 365/2+1 (Matrix) does feel very PAP once tou been fishing with a shark rod

We did a lot of rod testing recently and best value for money in the class you want is the Velocity 13' (for the distance you want)

4 of use were doing the test casting and we're not power casters but all anglers who have 10+ Prov A caps and 3 of us with 4+ Protea Caps so we know a bit about the rods.

Casting was with Shimano XTR-RA loaded with 0.17mm XX and 0.16mm C+ and 20lbs Jerry Brown Braid leaders with 2 and 3oz weight. Doing that much casting and testing rod actions we don't do Bolle on every cast.

All 4 Anglers did 190m+ with the rod and George Ruthven did 197m. My personal favourite still remains the G2 from Blue Marlin 13' and which will be matched or beaten by the Oval DC which we did over 200m 3 of the 4 (The rod will double as a 2-4oz plugging rod as well)

Reel, as you fish Tn in the sea don't mess with DL or ST at leadt the XTR-B (Torium Class) or XTR-RA (Trini Class)

Jerry Brown 20lbs 0.18mm and casts up to 4oz weighs no problem.

Braid mainline then look at 10lbs or less with diameter 0.15mm and less but braid floats and with long lange fishing gets washed around although that said I often fish 0.10mm Awa-Shima 7lbs braid to get distance and register bites quicker, I think it moves when a fish looks at the bait with desire.

Rather stay with mono mainline and braid leader for faster rod loading and keep the braid in the 20-30lbs class for specimen / catfish application.
