Advice on leader please

Hi

 

I need advice on how long the leader on dropshot should be used from the beach for Cob.  I am pretty new to facet and spend to much on it for the start.

 

I lost yesterday 25 M of Flouro carbin due to the braid that get jammed around the rod eyes in resulting throwing the leader of. After all my leader was ,lost I only practice straight with the braid and did not have any problems. Should the leader knot be on the reel before casting or should i use a shorter leader.

 

Please advice as I can not afford to lose R 200 tackle in 6 throws before I am able to retrieve any line.

Hi,

Try to keep your leader outside of the guides, i.e. 1m long and when you cast let only the braid go through your rod guides.

do you fish a scattered reef section?

i have two grinder setups... one for the kayak, boat and one for the shore where a fish scattered reef.

1. kayak reel has 1.0m of leader so no leader on the spool, have braid on this setup.
2. beach reel has twice the 9foot rod length, roughly 5.5m-6.0m, but i am fishing mono on this setup

make sure you dont overfill your reel with braid, windknots can result, also how did you wind on your braid? tight?

I generally keep my knot outside of the gudies. It depends on the size of guides on the rod.

I also prefer the 7turn uni - Fig 8 knot for joing the leader to braid vs. albright. Reason being that the tag end of the mono / fluoro points to the reel as opposed to the albright where the tag points towards the rod tip.

That little tag (I didn't trim the tag very close) pointing tipwards has caused me some serious mess!

Don't think the braid will cut ur finger that being said iv never casted anything over 1 1/2 ounce with braid. what weight lures/jig heads are u planning on casting?
