Hey guys,

I need some help here, I am of to denysville at the end of the month and besides my fly fishing gear and some bass outfits I have no gear for this type of fresh water "pap-gooi".(no offence meant)

Now I figure if I am spending the weekend there I need to throw a line, and have not done this type of fishing for years , but what do I need to get to get started, nothing to expensive as I really wont use this stuff much, rod, reel etc...

and also what sort of trace should I use with what baits etc... would not mind catching a barbel or two as well as your carp, yellows etc.

I am out of my depth here, please advise.

cheers

Hi, welcome to sealine!

Don't fret. You should know by now that the guys are a bit slow over weekends. lol!

Any rod over 12' should do as long as its medium to fast action. I have seen some nice rods for R150 each which should be fine for your needs. You can use any coffeegrinder, but the baitfeeder/baitrunner feature will be a plus. These you will find from R200 upwards. As long as it can take at least 200m of monofilament line under 0.30mm you should be fine. For leaders you can use mono above 14lbs. And rietvlei traces work best as you can put different baits on the top and bottom hooks to see what works better.

At the vaal anything sweet will be you best bet, adding someting stronger like garlik or devilsfork or duiwelsdrek or onion if its windy or the wind changes. Caramel is a staple for papgooi at vaaldam.

Here is a recipe I use that I found on sealine. This works everywhere. I just add stuff to it.

FX(Caramel recipe):
2x caramel essence
1x vanilla essence
1x caramel syrup (illovo)
1x caramel pudding powder
mix everything together in a clean 500ml coke bottle and enjoy catching some nice fishies.

Good stuff, I know every one was out fishing except me!! I am a bit impatient and will probably be heading of to a tackle store this morning!!!! Is that recipe for a dip? do you just add it to your baits? also what sort of baits would you take along?

Hehehe!

But you don't need a box full of muti's. I do a lot of club angling at the vaaldam. Here is all I have learned:

Combo 1 workes everywhere at the vaal):
FX(caramel) and Perdeby(smells like fireballs)

Combo2 (If combo 1 doesn't work):
A dot of vicks(yes vicks vaporub) covered with a mix of strawberry and molasses.

Combo 3:
After this I will try the onion dip also found on sealine with FX.

Combo 4:
Almond and Banjo (banana)

If this fails I will start experimenting with other stuff.

I very seldom get to combo 4.

Its much more important to cast on one spot everytime (kolgooi). Get a swim going and you won't be disappointed. Cast a few bombs out early and then say every 45mins or so.

Hi,

Thank you for the combo's, I will definitely try it. I have recently started club angling, and I must say that that my muti box was overloaded.....

Im currently busy compiling my top 15 dips. I hope to complete the survey by December, will let you know what the outcome is.

Good luck PI. Hope all goes well. I myself only have about 12 dips of which I use about 8. Most of them are stuff I make myself like the FX and Onion. I mixed some cinnamon powder into a little FX and and added a drop of Cloves Oil. Smells just like perdeby, and I have already caught fish on it.

Just one more thing about the combos. Sometimes I add a drop of TCP just to see if it gives any results.
