Hi Ayoba.

Yeah! And what made it so special for me is that it's the first time in my life I see one - in real life that is.


what is the biggest one caught in the VAAL any ideas?

no idea, I saw a few moggels been "jigged" in a place called "die draai" in Bronkhorstpruit dorp a few years ago at a wall in a small river, quite big ones as well

I also heard my one friend telling me' back in the days they jigged like 28moggels at the dam wall in one day, but one thing that is so strange is that they never got so big in the Vaal?


Is it a cross breed between a : Yellowfish and Muddy?

they can bump up to 3 kilos, well ive seen that size netteed, never hooked, apparently they filter feeders

Did the one in the pic get jigged as well? If not, what bait did it take as they hardly ever take bait.

This one was jigged, not on purpose, at Klipdriftdam.

HI no!

This moggel was caught on competition level - during our club comp, not sure what the bait was?

I'm asking the largest moggel caught at the vaal?

You weren't listening at the weigh in.

They constitute the largest percentage of biomass in the Vaal system

Plankton eaters so very seldom caught on bait but will be caught on a floatie or on a fly

SA Bank Angling records are in the 2.2-2.6kg classes and some of those are from the Vaal

Same family of fish as a Muddie and not a hybrid and is also known as a Mud Mullet

Hi Craig what was the original weight ? Thought it was 1.8kg?

You said it was 1.8kg I never said anything about that. What I wrote regarding the Vaal record, Biomass, feeding habits etc was discussed at the weigh in

With the water dead in winter with little algae and plankton they are very hungry and that is why more are caught in winter

hey guys. there is a place called rapids paradise just bellow the dam wall. i use to catch alot moggels there on fly (olive wooly bugger) dripted on the edge of the rappids. they take off at a crazy speed, but give up fairly quick. nothing huge, biggest was about 1.4kg smallest 900g.
