Shore based yellowtail spinning tackle

Hi everyone

I am looking to buy a new setup for yellowtail fishing from shore at Cape Point. I was thinking about getting the Shimano Exage heavy spinning rod paired with a Daiwa BG spinning reel, either the 5000 or 6500 spooled with 50lb Sufix 832 braid. I am still stuck choosing between the two reel sizes. Would the 6500 be too large? Would the 5000 be large enough? Any other advice is also welcome since I am quite new to this.
Tight lines!

I don't fish for yellowtail from the side, but the I use the BG6500 on my 13.6ft rod for large edibles. It is a big reel (Bigger than a Shimano size 10 000), and I'd imagine it's way too big for the application you have in mind. Even the 5000 may be too big for throwing lures for extended periods.

Hi Leerie007

I have the 11ft exage heavy spinning paired to a BG5000.

Before I got a bigger rod I used to use my BG6500 on this rod and was fine for casting and just leaving it for a bite but if you going to be constantly spinning for YT the 5000 would make more sense.

Also look at 40lb suffix 832 as this is already very thick and only breaks at 60lb anyways :) I was able to fit 400m of it on my 5000 which is plenty.

A standard for spinning tackle at Cape Point is the 10ft Exage Spinning paired with the older model Shimano Stradic or Sustain 6000/8000. They came with 2 spools. You can spool one with 30lbs and the other 50lbs 832. That stuff is very strong so 50lbs is quite heavy.

The rods are now tough to find but they do come up - as do the reels.

This outfit seems to be the right balance between power and weight. You may make 7-800 casts in a day so it pays to have a set up that will allow you to do this.

The 4500/5000 Daiwa BG is the reel that is similar in size to the older Shimano.

Do not try and re-invent the wheel on this one.

Anton

Thanks for all the quick replies!

Foose, I also want to get the 11ft exage. How is the 5000 BG with the 11ft rod? Considering that it will be for spinning, will it be comfortable for long sessions?

The 40lb braid is also a good option. I will look into it.

Thanks

11ft is too long. It is hard to spin for long periods of time with a rod that long especially in the wind. At Cape Point distance is not a major factor. Cast accuracy and your lures time in the water are far more important.

That setup balances very nicely and I have had allot of spinning sessions with it already mostly throwing big heavy plugs for leerie at Fransmanshoek or from the surf.
The 10 ft should get you very close to the same casting distance and if space behind you is a problem then it would work better.

Side Note: When you get tired of throwing lures it also doubles up as a kick ass gallie setup for the winter :)

I am hoping to revive this thread. I am looking to get a spinning rod to use at Cape Point but the Shimano Exage mentioned here doesnt seem to be available anymore.

Any recommendations on a similar rod that is readily available?

One of the strongest lure casting rods I have ever held is the new assassin duel xt mh 8ft
Pair this with a 6000 or 8000 Shimano and 30lb JDB DNA and you can cast all day and still pull out a bus. 8ft casts way better than you think.

Thanks for the recommendation, Don! I will check out that assassin
